The Red Deer

The male deer is called a stag. The female deer is called a hind.

The male has large antlers which begin to grow in the April of his second year and are fully grown by August or September.

The female deer does not have antlers.

The stag has a very keen sense of smell and can smell a man’s presence a mile away.

The stag’s favourite food is grass, acorns and bark of trees.

Calves are born in June and stay with their mother for a year.

The deer is red or brown in colour. In the Phoenix Park you can usually find the deer near Oldtown Wood o rnear The Fifteen Acres.
