BALLYMORE PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD
2002
PADDY
MONAGHAN
At the award ceremony in the excellently refurbished Resource
Centre on Friday January 24, 2003 a full house attended and glowing praise was
paid to Paddy for his years of commitment to his community. Below L to R: Jim Clarke, Rose O'Donoghue, Michael Ward, Sean Farrington, Paddy Monaghan, Fr Michael McGowan P.P.
***************
Congratulations to Paddy on being chosen for the above award. Over the years Paddy has lent his support to every club and good cause in the Ballymore area. He has been involved with the Football Club, the Boxing Club, the Badminton Club, the Dramatic Society, the Brass and Reed Band and, of course, the Handball Club where he has been the mainstay for more years than he probably cares to remember. With most of the clubs his involvement was both as a player and an official. Local charities have also benefited from his help in fundraising. His favourite charity was the local branch of the St. Vincent de Paul Society with which he was associated for many years. He was ever ready to help with field days, the community games and to lend a neighbourly hand when needed.
All-Ireland
SMBD 60 By 30 Final
Ballymore man Ollie Deegan and his partner, Pat Coffey
of Moone, each won a second All-Ireland medal when they teamed up again in the
SMBD 60 by 30 handball final at Roscommon recently. Mayo's J.Staunton and J.
Granahan provided the opposition in a match which went the full three games.
The Kildare men won the first game 21 - 17. In the second game there was a
major turn around with the Mayo men winning by 21 - 3. The third and final game
was closely contested with the Kildare men getting the better of their
opponents on a final score line of 21 - 19. Ollie's participation was in doubt
right up to the last minute due to a back injury. In the event his partner Pat
took the lion's share of the play with Ollie providing as much support as his
injury permitted.
The winning combination will now take a well earned break and hope to team up
again for next year's championships.
Ollie's club mates Seamie O'Brien and Billy Gobbett were not so fortunate when
they lost by 21 - 12 and 21- 5 to Roscommon's D. Dowd and B. Kilcommins in the
All-Ireland DMBD 60 by 30 handball final at Mullingar.
Local
handball star, Daragh Ward, scored a resounding win in the All-Ireland Junior
Hard Singles final at the Garda Depot on Saturday when he defeated S. Maughan
of Mayo in straight games. In the semi-final, Daragh had a tough match against
Padraig Gaffney of Sligo in which Daragh suffered a sore hand giving rise to
concerns that this might jeopardise his prospects in the final - luckily this
did not prove to be the case. This success brings to three the number of
All-Ireland medals Daragh has won to-date. In 1994 he won the Minor Hard
Singles title while in 1996 he teamed up with Trevor Winder to win the Under 21
Soft Doubles title. After a break from the game it is good to see Daragh back
in top form. In winning Daragh became the ninth Ballymore handballer to win
this particular title. Mickey Dowling was our first winner when he took the
title in 1941. Others winners were: Bobbie Grattan (1947), Jim Bolger (1948),
Bill Lawlor (1953), Billy Doran (1957), Matt Purcell (1973), Michael Dowling
(1985) and Anthony Campbell (1995).
***************
Ballymore man Ollie Deegan achieved a life time ambition when he teamed up with Pat Coffey of Moone to win the All-Ireland SMBD handball final at Garryhill, Co. Carlow on Sunday last. Tipperary's Jeddi McKeogh and Michael Gleeson provided the Kildare men with stern opposition right up to the final score in the match. The Tipperary men got off to a good start but thanks to the battling qualities of Ollie and Pat the Kildare men survived the initial onslaught to win the first game with a bit to spare. Throughout the second game every ace was strongly contested and, mid-way through this game, there was some evidence that the hot early pace was taking its toll on Kildare. Fortunately, Ollie found hidden reserves to tide them over this temporary crises and Kildare went on the win the match in straight games. In winning Ollie became the second member of his family to achieve All-Ireland success. His brother Eamonn won the Junior hardball doubles title in 1969 partnered by John Browne both of whom were among the large group of Kildare supporters present to cheer Ollie and Pat on to a deserved win.

Ollie
Deegan teams up with Pat Coffey of Moone to represent Kildare in the
All-Ireland SMBD handball final against Tipperary at Garryhill, Co. Carlow on
Sunday May 12, 2002. Tipperary are represented by Jeddi McKeogh and Michael
Gleeson. The three match programme starts at 2 p.m. The Kildare men scored a
notably victory over a talented Antrim duo of Seamus Collins and Tom Smith in
the semi-final played at Croke Park on Sunday April 28, 2002 and can be
expected to acquit themselves well in Sunday's final. As the venue is close at
hand the Kildare men are looking forward to a good turn out by their
supporters.
