Maoin Cheoil an Chláir

Structure

Maoin Cheoil an Chláir is a limited company and a registered Charity. It has four shareholders: Rural Resource Development Ltd, Clare County Council, The Sisters of Mercy and Co. Clare Vocational Education Committee. The Board also includes representatives of various musical interests in the County including Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and the Willie Clancy Summer School.

Concerts

Since its inception Maoin Cheoil an Chláir has promoted or hosted frequent concerts including the Irish Chamber Orchestra and other orchestras, and many visiting choirs, groups and soloists. In addition, short courses in piping, harp, flute, recorder, banjo and traditional fiddle have been given, and the traditional music recital series, Fidil Beo, has hosted many Clare and visiting performers. Student concerts take place throughout each term, and a student concert was a central feature of the Official Opening of Maoin Cheoil an Chláir by President Mary Robinson in April 1994. All students and their parents have free membership of the Junior or Senior Choir, both of which meet every Tuesday evening in the School. The Parents and Adult Pupils' Group run a Strauss evening in the Old Ground Hotel in November (with dancing to an orchestra of teachers, students and friends), as well as Flag Days, outings and other events; they also help with the management of The Clare Orchestra.

Outreach

Maoin Cheoil an Chláir has begun its outreach programme to other parts of Clare with John O'Brien running a Community Choir in Scariff and Martina Peters teaching violin in Killaloe. A wide-ranging Summer School takes place in July, and the well-established Ennis IMRO Composition Summer School makes use of the school's facilities. The Kilfenora Céilí Band and other groups and choirs use the building for rehearsal throughout the year. Every May an Fleadh Nua holds master classes and concerts in Maoin Cheoil an Chláir, and the school regularly hosts examinations for the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

Maoin Cheoil an Chláir has so far produced two first-prize-winning groups in the National Slógadh competition, as well as high results in Leaving Certificate and other music examinations.

At Maoin Cheoil an Chláir fees are kept to a minimum to ensure inclusivity. Group classes in suitable subjects are given at highly competitive rates. In addition, this year for the first time scholarships and bursaries funded by Clare LEADER will make music tuition available to those who otherwise could not avail of it.
