Willie Loughman / Crk-On-Suir Forestry Rally

The Carrick-on-Suir motor clubs' 'Willie Loughman memorial forestry rally takes place on Sunday next on the forestry stages of Slieve na mban and Gurteen wood above Kilsheelan. Irelands longest running forestry rally has attracted its usual capacity entry but even more remarkably is that it had enough entries to run two events. Last year is was the last rally before the outbreak of FMD shut down motorsport for most of the year. Rally head quarters is the Carraig Hotel, Carrick-on-Suir with scrutiny in The Mill River Business Park. The rally is the second round of two major championships; The TRITON SHOWERS South East Stages Rally Championship and the KBB Doors National Forestry Rally Championship.
The quality of the entry extends well into the late twenties with a considerable number of WRC and 4 x4 supercars throughout the entry list. Heading the seeding are the Limerick pairing and former winners, Dermot Kelly / J. Brennan who are debuting their Escort WRC. At two are Antrim's Domnic McNeill / F. Reegan in an Escort Cos'. Domnic actually built Kelly's car but is not adopting the role of roving mechanic!!
At three are Eamon Boland / A. Nestor in the forestry spec. Subaru WRC. Eamon is a relatively newcomer to forestry rallying but is adapting very quickly. He acquitted himself with an excellent result in last year's RAC rally. Derry's Eugene Donnolly with P. Nagle on the notes is all the time developing his Toyota Celica to cope with the loose conditions. Wicklow's Niall Driver / F. Corrigan slot in at number five. Last years KBB Doors National Forestry champion is no stranger to these stages and will again give a good account of himself. A veteran of the Carrick-on-Suir event is Kevin O'Kane / S. Griffin from Omagh in his Subaru Impreza. Kevin has been making the long trek to Carrick with at least 25 years and his knowledge must now be considered that of a local. His great friend and rival Peter McCullagh / P. Carey from Maynooth is at seven. Peter won this event two years ago after almost 20 years of trying.
The second Donnolly, Charlie (some say the first!!) with TBA or perhaps God as the navigator is also Toyota Celica mounted will provide stiff opposition and spectacle. Another former winner (in his young days) is Omagh's Robbie McGurk with the well-known Rory Kennedy in the hot seat. Robbie upstaged Frank Meagher to win a snowy event in a 1600 Avenger against Franks more powerful Escort MK 2. Robbie has a state of the are Subaru Impreza to wheel around this year. Seeking revenge for that victory will be local hero Frank Meagher / Pat Maloughney in the ex Richie Curran Sierra Cos'. Frank is seeded on Robbie's tail in the car that was second overall last year. It will take all of Frank 's skill and guile to match that result.
And that folks is just the top ten seeds. Further crews of interest are Brian Murphy Joe Downey who has local business interests. Brian has a Subaru WRC for the day and is better known in tarmac circles as Austin McHale's navigator. Brian is no mean peddler on the loose and has the potential to bring off a surprise result. Local crews include Jimmy Lambert / J. Coleman and Shay Power / M. Croke both in Escort Mk2. Kieran Molloy / B. Boland have the Mitsubishi EVO 6 whilst Trevor Harding / C. Boland have a Subaru for the day, just for comparison testing against their usual Ford Ka. Alan Commins, Connie Delaney from Piltown will have the usual battle supremacy. Whilst the sons of 'greats' will have their own battle, namely Gus Kearney and Donie Keating (both the younger.)There are several more locals scattererd about the entry. This event ran in 1977 as a forestry (in the morning) and tarmac in the afternoon before becoming a forestry only event in 1978. It was called the Ravens Rock Rally after the high point in Gurteen Wood.
The stage structure for the event is three stages repeated on Slieve na mban in the morning followed by two stages repeated in the afternoon in Gurteen Wood above Kilsheelan. There is virtually no a access to the stages on Slieve na mban unless one arrives very early, is prepared to walk long distances and wait for the stage the second time around. It's just not practicable or possible to see the top ten cars and then move onto the next stage. Programmes will be on sale in the usual outlets in Carrick-on-Suir, Kilsheelan, Ormond Stores, Grangemockler, Nine-mile House and Ballypatrick. Thanks to Joseph O Brien

Toshiba Tarmac Championship 2002

Toshiba have announced that they will continue their association with the Tarmac Rally Organisers Association, and that the eight-round 2002 Toshiba Tarmac Championship promises to be more hotly contested than ever before.
The series, based mainly in Ireland but including rounds in the Isle of Man and, for the first time, in Scotland, will feature the largest contingent of World Rally Cars outside the World Championship itself, and promises excitement at every turn of the road from the start of the opening round on Easter Saturday to the finish of the final stage in November. Alan Thompson, Managing Director of Toshiba for the UK and Ireland said: "We are delighted to be back. It's great to be involved in such a significant and exciting Championship and we are looking forward to a great 2002, both in sport and in business." Tom Walsh, Chairman of the Tarmac Rally Organisers Association said:"We are delighted Toshiba have continued their support and we acknowledge their commitment to the Championship. "We are looking forward to a competitive eight-round Championship with renewed enthusiasm following the problems posed by the Foot & Mouth outbreak last year." The new, expanded eight-round Championship will see the crews doing battle in various parts of the British Isles during the year, starting in Northern Ireland.

Round 1: Circuit of Ireland, March 29 - April 1
The Ulster Automobile Club has put together a compact route centered on Enniskillen for the Easter Classic this year. At no point does the event go more than 50 miles away from Rally Headquarters, yet the stages selected are among the most challenging to be found anywhere in Ireland. This year the 'Circuit' will be run to a 'World Championship' format in three loops, the first starting on Easter Saturday afternoon and the final group of stages finishing on Easter Monday.

Round 2: Killarney Rally of the Lakes, May 4/5
Killarney offers some of the best rallying terrain to be found anywhere in Europe. Magnificent scenery and equally magnificent roads provide an unparalleled arena for Round 2 of the Toshiba series, while Killarney's legendary hospitality ensures that competitors, rally officials and spectators will have a memorable time, both on and off the special stages.

Round 3: Donegal International Rally, June 21- 23
Donegal first came to rallying prominence some 30 years ago when the local motor club decided that there was so much good rallying country on their doorstep that they need never venture out of the county again! Since then the Donegal International has steadily grown in stature, and today it stands as one of the strongest, and most spectacular, events on the International calendar. Its unique atmosphere, helped by a midsummer date which (usually) adds fine weather to the mixture makes it highly deserving of its unofficial title 'The Donegal Grand Prix'!

Round 4: Jim Clark Memorial Rally, July 12/13
A newcomer to the Championship and a relatively new event, the 'Jim Clark' was originally a forestry rally devised to commemorate the life of the great Scottish World Champion. More recently however it has become the only major event on mainland Britain to run on closed public roads. Based close to Jim Clark's family home at Duns in Berwickshire on the Scottish borders it is also a round of the British Championship in 2002.

Round 5: Manx International Rally, August 1- 3
An August date moves 'the Manx' right into the middle of the holiday season on the motor sport-mad island and this should help make it one of the most popular events of the year with spectators. Always fast and competitive, the Manx provides Toshiba Tarmac contenders with their second confrontation with British Championship regulars. The Isle of Man may be a relatively small island, but it has all the ingredients for a classic event.

Round 6: Ulster Rally, September 6/7
Short, sharp and challenging, the Ulster Rally makes a welcome return to the ranks of Toshiba Tarmac events this year. With its traditional stages a combination of rural and mountain roads, the Ulster is a tough test of both crews and machinery. The fact that it's all crammed into 24 hours makes it hard work too. Whoever wins the Ulster will have earned his victory! Extra spice comes from the fact that this the third Toshiba Tarmac round to count towards the British Championship.

Round 7: Cork '20' International, October 4- 6
The fast Cork stages offer a new challenge to Toshiba Tarmac competitors as the season draws towards its close. Cork offers a wide variety of conditions for rallying, from very fast, smooth tarmac to the kind of mountain terrain you might expect in Southern Europe. The Cork '20' originally lasted just 20 hours. It's a three-day event now, and that's not counting the after-rally hospitality!

Round 8: West 2002, Galway, November 8- 9
A welcome back to Galway's International rally that, some years ago, was the traditional starting point of the International season in Ireland. The date may have changed, but Galway's roads are as tricky to read as ever, and its dry stone walls just as solid as they were. Again an event offering all kinds of terrain - and great hospitality too - but with the added uncertainties of November weather. It could go all the way 'down to the wire'.

A classic Championship then, and whoever becomes Toshiba Tarmac Rally Champion 2002 will have earned the title!

Subaru in Tarmac test

The 555 Subaru World Rally Team recently completed a four-day tarmac test in Spain to try out a number of new components and settings on the Subaru Impreza WRC. The testing focussed on assessing long-term performance projects, as well as evaluating the latest tyre compounds and constructions from team partners Pirelli.
After the slippery Alpine roads of Monte Carlo, and with the tarmac challenges of Corsica and Catalunya just around the corner, the test was also an opportunity for Tommi Makinen to get some experience of the Impreza WRC on dry tarmac. For days one and two he was behind the wheel of the team's test car and drove a total of 408kms. Tommi experimented with various differential combinations, suspension dampers and the latest tyre developments from Pirelli.
Tommi said, "The test was very good, there were no big problems and we made a lot of progress with some of the more experimental components we tried. It was especially useful for me to get some more hours in the car, as I had no real experience of it, or the tyres, on a dry surface before. My first impression was that it was fast - very fast, and by the end of the second day we had made some little changes here and there and I was happy with the set-up and its handling behaviour."
For days three and four Petter Solberg took over the driving and put another 300kms of high-speed mileage on some of the team's latest ideas. Petter also evaluated several new evolutions of Pirelli's tarmac tyres and tried some of Tommi's preferred transmission settings.
Test Team Manager Tom Hunt said, "I think we're all very pleased with the results we've achieved here. This wasn't designed to be a pre-event test for Corsica or Catalunya, as we have two of those coming up, instead we wanted to see how our engineers' ideas would perform against the clock. Overall we've made some excellent progress, and have also arrived at a good base set-up for our pre-event tests."

Thompson to line out in Super 106 GTI

James Thompson, works Vauxhall BTCC driver, has just reached an agreement with Peugeot Sport UK to drive the ex. Justin Dale championship winning Peugeot 106 Super GTi in the 2002 British Rally Championship. 27 year old Thompson intends to compete in all rounds of this years British Rally Championship other than the Jim Clark Rally, which clashes with the Croft round of the BTCC. Thompson will be partnered by fellow Yorkshireman Craig Thorley on all events and is looking forward to a new challenge in his motorsport career. Thompson commented; This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time. My priority is still the BTCC programme, but the rallying really appeals to me. I hope to get a few smaller events under my belt before the first BRC round so that I get used to the car. Also, Craig and I will have a chance to build up an in car rapport. With no sequential gear change, less than half the power and mud and gravel on the track, its certainly going to be different! Thompson, son of well-known rally driver Piggy Thompson, sees rallying as a possible route for the future. But for now it is an opportunity to explore another avenue of motorsport that he feels he wants to master. Peugeot Sport UK Motorsport Manager Mick Linford commented; It is great to have James in the BRC. I remember witnessing James drive a car when he was just 14 years old and it was obvious then that he would be driving a rally car one day. Once he finds his feet I have no doubt he will be one to watch.

Tony Pond loses battle with cancer

Tony Pond, one of Britain's most successful rally drivers of the 1970s and 1980s, died on February 7 at the age of 56. He had been suffering from cancer.
Best known for his long association with what is now MG Rover, Pond also drove with distinction for Chevrolet, Chrysler, Nissan, Opel and Vauxhall. He was the first driver to win the Manx International Rally four times, defeating drivers of the calibre of Hannu Mikkola, Walter Rohrl and Ari Vatanen in the process. He was perhaps at his best on tarmac, also winning the 24 Hours of Ypres twice in TR7V8s and taking a remarkable third place on the 1981 Tour of Corsica in a Nissan Violet, but his international victories included some of the most gruelling forest rallies in South Africa.
Perhaps his most memorable performance came on the 1985 RAC Rally - the last of the unrestricted, through-the-night versions - when he took the Metro 6R4 to third on its first World Championship appearance, dogging Lancia's Finns Henri Toivonen and Markku Alen from start to finish. The 6R4 failed to live up to expectations as a World Championship contender and Pond's international career all but ceased a year later, but he maintained his Rover links in cars such as the Maestro, the Rover 800 (in which he lapped the Isle of Man TT course at an average of more than 100 mph) the Metro and the MGF. He was also a talented racing driver.
Charismatic and quotable, Pond was an intensely private man, who devoted himself largely to charity after he retired from driving. He leaves a wife and son.

Freddy Loix hero of Swedish Rally

Hyundai Castrol World Rally Team crew Juha Kankkunen and Juha Repo finished the Uddeholm Swedish Rally, the second round of the FIA World Rally Championship, in a confident eighth position after three days of determined competition.
On an event that has disabled and hindered many, the Finns settled into a comfortable rhythm on the first leg of the event setting stage times well inside the top ten, including a sixth fastest on the longest stage of the event the 40.51km Granberget, to finish the day in seventh. They were niggled with differential problems on a couple of stages during the second day disrupting their rhythm slightly but lost only two positions in the process. Their rhythm rediscovered, they held position by continuing to set top ten stage times, to take the team's first manufacturer point of the season for the Korean marque. "I'm very happy with finishing eighth and managing to score a point for Hyundai – quite good for our first event of the year," said four-time World Champion Kankkunen. "To start with the car ran very well and I got a good feeling with it. Obviously it was a bit more difficult on leg two but once we got the diff sorted we managed to set some better times again. It was the conditions that really made this event difficult. It is the most beautiful rally when you have full winter conditions and it's whole character changes when it's thawing and all you get is gravel and mud – a pity also as we all drive much better in proper snow." Not to diminish the achievements of the Finnish duo, the true stars of the event were Belgians Freddy Loix and Sven Smeets. Despite driving with a broken foot, Belgium's most successful driver put in an outstanding performance working his way to an overnight position of fifth on the opening day, clocking a third fastest stage time on the longest stage of the event. The pair moved up to fourth on the first stage of leg two and held position until the opening test of the final day where they retired 7km into special stage 14, only two stages prior to the end of the event. Throughout the rally, Freddy experienced extreme fatigue in his left thigh muscle which was bearing the brunt of the support for his lower leg in a plastic brace, but to some surprise, no pain – a possible testament to the work of his physiotherapist and both his physical and mental strength. His rally may have been truncated by a failed suspension, but his renewed spirit and speed is overflowing.
"Obviously I am disappointed not to finish but we had a fantastic rally and made no mistakes," said Loix. "I did my absolute best and competing here has been very good for my head. It can be very difficult after an accident deciding how long you leave it before driving again and I know that my speed is still there. Once I was back in the car I forgot about my foot and I believe it is better to have driven fast, proved that my speed is still there and retired, than to have driven slowly and finished lower down the order. Now my head is in a good frame of mind to go to Corsica, confident that we can perform well there too." Team-mates Armin Schwarz and Manfred Hiemer had a less fortunate event, initially losing time sliding off the road after a snow bank gave in on leg one and losing over four minutes rejoining it. Losing the bonnet light pod in the off-road excursion also didn't help for the last stage of that day which was run in the dark. Differential problems during leg two took some confidence away from Schwarz but he pushed on to work his way back up the leaderboard, before the transmission failed during stage 14 and forced the former European Champions into retirement.
