Sports Complex Opening

NEW SPORTS COMPLEX OPENED IN MOUNTMELLICK TOWN BY THE MINISTER FOR SPORT AND TOURISM, 6th MARCH, 2000.

Nine years of hard work by the community of Mountmellick paid off, by for the new complex in the town which holds the sports the town plays.  The sports complex is valued at about three-quarters of a million pounds. The main hall of the new complex holds about two hundred people.

It caters for Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Indoor Soccer, Indoor Hurling, Indoor hockey. The complex also includes a kitchen, dressing rooms, meeting rooms and toilets.

Ms Emer Hanniffy, assistant secretary of the committee welcomed the Minister and the guests of Mountmellick. Mr Moloney thanked the Minister for approving the grant aid, from the national Lottery fund. Mr Moloney also paid great thanks to Fianna Fail member, Brian Cowen, whom had supported in the complex.  He described the complex as being a tremendous asset to Mountmellick and particular for the younger people of the town. Mr Paddy Bracken, Chairman of Mountmellick Town Commissioner thanked the committee for the provision of such great facilities for the town. Chairman of the Board of members, Fr Frank McNamara said the complex was for all community members. He also thanked all the other committee members for their hard work and dedication in bringing the years of effort to fruition.
