- Cairo is the capital of Egypt.
- The first lock and key was invented in Egypt about 4,000 years ago. The lock had a large wooden key that looked like a big toothbrush.
- The women from royal families were shown great respect because they were thought of as mother, wife or daughter of god.

Papyrus reeds grew along the banks of the river Nile. The Egyptians made rope, baskets, sandals, paper and boats from papyrus.
The Egyptians knew that the speed of a person's heartbeat showed whether they were sick or not. They also knew how to stitch wounds. |

The shaduf was used by Egyptian farmers to irrigate the land. A heavy container of water on one end of a pole was balanced by a weight on the other end. This made it easier to lift it out of the river before pouring the water onto the land.

Craft workers lived in every town and village community. They were very skillful. They included pottery workers, metal workers, jewellers, carpenters, boat builders and leathers workers. Women were expert spinners, weavers and makers of clothes. Farmers traded food for small objects.
Egyptians were very religious. They worshipped many gods. They worshipped Osiris, god of the Nile and Ra the god of the sun. Great statues were built for their gods. They had many holidays when they offered sacrifices to their gods. They even danced to please the gods.
Sports were popular. The Egyptians enjoyed athletics, hunting, fishing and riding in horse-drawn chariots.
