St. Canice's Graveyard

The grave of Mary Shelly's Aunt, Eliza Wolstencraft-Bishop

There are over a thousand people buried in St. Canice's Graveyard. The earliest recorded burial dates from 1647. Protestants and Catholics were buried in the graveyard but the funerals came in through different gates. Some famous people are buried in the graveyard. One is Eliza-Wolstonecraft-Bishop the aunt of Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein.

The ruined church in the graveyard was built on the site of St. Canice's Abbey between the 10th and 12th centuries. The church was in use until 1841.
