Gymnastics

The athletes who compete in gymnastics are called gymnasts.  Gymnasts must be very strong and agile.  Gymnasts twist, flip, turn and tumble in the air. There are three kinds of gymnastics in the Olympic Games. They are artistic, rhythmic and trampoline.

Artistic Gymnastics

Men's artistic gymnastics include:  floor exercises, vaulting horse, pommel horse, parallel bars, high bar, rings.

Women's artistic gymnastics include:  flooor exercises, vaulting horse, beam, asymmetric or uneven bars.  Women use music in their floor exercises, men don't.

In 1976 Nadi Comaneci of Romania was the first woman to score a perfect ten on the uneven bars.

Rhythmic Gymnastics

Rhythmic gymnastics is for women. The gymnasts move in time to music.  They dance, roll and tumble with a rope, ball, hoop, ribbon or clubs. The gymnasts throw those things high in the air and catch them.

Trampoline

The Sydney Olympic Games was the first time for trampoline in the Olympic Games.  In trampoline, the gymnasts bounce very high on a trampoline.  They twist and tumble in the air. Some gymnasts can stay in the air for two seconds.
