What is the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme?:
The Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (L.C.V.P.) can be described as a Leaving Certificate with a strong vocational dimension. It provides students with the opportunity to release their potential for self-directed learning, for innovation and for enterprise.
What is its purpose and why was it introduced?:
The L.C.V.P. was introduced in response to the changing needs of Ireland's education system and the changing work and business environment. The programme balances the virtues of the traditionall academic Leaving Certificate with the development of skills and qualities which will prove relevant to the lives of students on leaving school for further education, the world of work, or the business of making a living.
The content of the L.C.V.P. shares common ground with the needs of the community where changing work environments place more emphasis on the need for new employees to be well educated, confidents, adaptable, good at solving problems and familiar with a range of technologies.
What do students study on the L.C.V.P.?:
The core of the L.C.V.P. includes the following elements which students must take:
Two Leaving Certificate subjects from one of the subject groupings, a Leaving Certificate language or vocational language module, three link modules on 'Enterprise Education', 'Preparation for Work', and ' Work Experience'.
In total, L.C.V.P. students must take at least five Leaving Certificate subjects, one of which, must be Irish.
Most L.C.V.P. students must take Business Organisation and Home Economics as the two subjects of their subject grouping. They might also take English, Maths and one other subject. In addition, they would take the three link modules.
