![]() Mercy College was one of the first schools to offer the Leaving Certificate Applied programme to its students when it was introduced in September, 1995. From the beginning the programme got off to a flying start, with great support from, and enthuasiam shown by, both teaching staff and parents. The large number of students interested in joining the programme each year speaks for the interest pupils have in this innovative course. During the first cycle of the programme, the school came under high profile attention when a Mercy student, Georgina McLoughlin was interviewed by both Pat Kenny and Gay Byrne, on their radio programmes. Georgina represented Leaving Certificate Applied students across the country as she spoke about the course and the benefits it had for her. As a result of this, Georgina was invited to speak the the promotional launch of the Leaving Certificate Applied programme at Dublin Castle in the 6th of May, 1997. On that day she was joined by Senator Fergal Quinn, the then Minister for Education, Niamh Breathnach and the Chief Inspector of the Department of Education and Science, Eamon Stack. The school, needless to say, was very proud of her. Since completing her Leaving Certificate, Georgina has taken up employment with Abbott Ireland, Ltd.
