Volleyball (1989-1997) Mercy College has a very strong tradition of Volleyball, reaching back to the mid-1970s and early-1980s. The teams at this time, competed at very high levels in the National Competitions and were coached by, the now PE teacher, Mrs. Verdon. Volleyball in the school re-emerged in 1989 with Mrs. Verdon and Mr. McGovern sharing coaching responsibilities until 1997. The main highlight of this period was the 1993 All Ireland victory, by the Senior team, in Ballinakil, Co. Laois. In 1995, the Senior team reached the All Ireland semi-finals, but in 1996, the Junior team were crowned All Ireland champions.
