School History & the Mercy Order

Mercy College, a voluntary Catholic Secondary school under the trusteeship of the Sisters of Mercy, opened its doors to its first students in 1946. For over half a century it has adopted itself to meet the educational needs of girls in Sligo and the surrounding areas.

The present building replaced the original structure in 1976. A modern new gymnasium was completed in 1987 and new classrooms, Science laboratories and an Oratory were added in 1993. Plans for another huge extension have been drawn up and approved by the Department of Education. New tennis courts and a modern running track, completed in 1998, added greatly to our sporting facilities.
