Congratulations to the Merville
United U14 Lions Squad on an excellent victory over Kilmurry of Mayo in
the U14 Goosen Cup on Sunday last. Inclement weather conditions
threatened to spoil the contest, but an early breakthrough saw the game
spark into a hard fought contest, settled only late into the 70
contested minutes. The Lions now play Temple Villa in the next round on
Saturday Next KO 2pm.
A Tight encounter was what was
expected, and that exactly was what was delivered at the Showgrounds
Mondo Pitch in the U12 Development League encounter between Merville
United Hammers and Seaview on Saturday last. The game had all the
thrills and spills of a local derby, and valiant performances by both
goalkeepers played no small part in the eventual stalemate that resulted
in a no score draw. Congratulations to all the players involved.
Our thanks to the Committee and
Members of Cliffoney Grange United for the successful hosting of the
Under 10 Blitz in the Showgrounds on Sunday. Excellent organisation
resulted in several games for all our sides, and we look forward to the
final series of games in two weeks time, organised by Strand Celtic,
which will conclude the Autumn series of inter club events. Selected U8
Academy members will be participating in the Pilot Futsal Programme this
Saturday Morning, details of which will be given at Fridays session at
the Showground’s

Our Junior team got their campaign
off to a good start on Sunday when they took on Cliffoney Res in
Merville.
Merville got off to the perfect
start after 10 mins when Gavin Dykes struck the ball from the
half way line and put the ball in the net, later in the half
keeper Caoilin O Grady threw the ball out to left back Stephen
Hallihan when he played the ball to Kian Mc Keown who then
struck the ball and scored a great goal giving the Cliffoney
keeper no chance. in the second half Cliffoney started the
better of the two putting Merville under pressure for long
periods of the game. after 8 mins in the second half Cliffoney
scored then Merville replied with another goal this time from
David Blain. Again Cliffoney responded with another goal. At
this stage it was very tense with nothing between the sides.

It
proved to an entertaining affair in the challenge game between
Sligo Rovers and Merville United on Wednesday night in the
Showgrounds. This battle of the near neighbours was always going
to be a one sided affair but Merville can take heart from their
performance as they prepare for life back in the Junior Soccer
league.
Rovers started fast and were five up after twenty minutes. Sean
Doherty, Chris Butler, David McDaid and Danny Ventre all got on
the score-sheet with Keith Coleman scoring an own goal.
Doherty’s was the pick of the bunch as he struck home a sublime
left foot shot from thirty yards. Merville got their first in
the 25th minute. Mauro Almeida passed the ball back to Richard
Brush with Merville’s Gareth Kelly blocking him down before
going on to tap the ball into the empty net.
Merville enjoyed a good spell after this with Kelly forcing a
smart save from Brush while Johnny Martyn went close with a long
range strike. It was Rovers though who were next to score with
Ventre getting his second in the 35th minute. A minute after
that John Bellew set up Sean Doherty while Bellew turned
provider again in the 39th minute this time playing in Richie
Ryan. Rovers then won a penalty which Doherty stepped up to take
but his kick was saved by Merville keeper Emmet Foley.
Merville had the last word in the half as Stephen Hallahan
whipped in a corner from the right which was turned into his own
net by Ventre under pressure from Caolan O’Grady. The second
half saw Rovers change teams as the A team took the pitch. They
soon continued were the first team left off with Paul McTiernan
scoring twice either side of a goal from Steve Feeney. Bellew
got his first of the night with Mikey Creane scoring the last of
Rovers goals in the 71st minute.
Rovers manager Paul Cook came on himself in the second half and
would have got on the scoresheet but for a top class save from
Foley. It was Merville who wrapped up the scoring in the third
when they awarded a penalty in the 90th minute which was
confidently tucked away by Aaron Murren. This was the first of
what will hopefully be an annual fixture and after the game
there was plenty of post match discussions in Mooney’s Bar who
sponsored the match.
