Merlin Castle

The castle in Merlin Woods, which is about a half mile from our school, dates back to the 15 century when the Earl of Clonrickarde De Burgo built it. It was a lot bigger then but all the outer parts were either blown down or pulled down by attackers over the centuries. The castle has a spiral staircase which connects the five floors. This staircase went from the battlements at the top of the castle to the "Murder Hole " which was located in the dungeon. The ground floor was used for storage. The first floor was the kitchen, the second floor was the owner's quarters and the third was the great hall which was used for banquets and dining. The top floor was for the guards who kept lookout over the battlements in case of an attack. There was a hipped roof on the castle which would have been either thatched or slated.
