MathsMatters are currently taking bookings for Junior and Leaving Certificate Preparation Courses for 2019/2020. Courses will commence in September 2019 for Leaving and Junior Cert Higher and Ordinary levels and will be based in Dundrum. Each course includes an intensive focus on Algebra, which provides the necessary foundation across the whole Mathematics curriculum, in-depth study and concise summaries of individual topics and the integrated application of these topics necessary to tackle the more general questions as envisaged by the Project Maths curriculum.

"Many students are not achieving their full potential in Maths. To address this I take a two-pronged approach - firstly, I cover the basics from the ground up - because in my experience many students unfortunately fall down at this stage and get left behind - and secondly, I focus on tackling past exam questions to evaluate and reinforce the improvement achieved and to prepare thoroughly for the test ahead".

All course sessions are an hour and a quarter long. A term will typically comprise of twelve sessions and will cost €235.

Expert versus Novice Learning

The focus at MathsMatters is on turning our pupils into Expert learners. An expert is not primarily someone who knows a great deal about a discipline but someone who understands how a discipline is organised. We all learn by building on what we know, however without an understanding of how a discipline is organised novice learners see new information as more or less an endless stream of random data. Experts' thinking on the other hand is organised around "big ideas" or central concepts in the field so that new information can be categorised and more easily assimilated. At MathsMatters we identify within each major Mathematical topic, such as Trigonometry, Calculus or Statistics, the key concepts or principles the student needs to absorb and apply in order to solve the vast bulk of novel problems presented to them in that topic. This deeper level of learning also helps integrate concepts across different topics hence providing the expertise required to tackle the more 'Project Maths'-type questions which can span several topics.

Algebra Course

[temporary image]

MathsMatters pays particular attention to improving students' abilities in Algebra and to that end provides specialised Algebra courses. To understand and be proficient in Algebra is the key to doing well at Mathematics whether it be at Junior or Leaving Cert level. Algebra defines the language of Mathematics and provides the foundation on which Mathematics is built. A course in Algebra, especially before the exam years, pays huge dividends in building the students' confidence and increasing their capacity for learning during normal Maths classes.

"Michael gave maths grinds to three of my children, two at leaving cert level and one for junior cert.
