Trim Gate

Up

Trim Gate faces to the the north-west countryside. It was built around 1180, replacing an earlier wooden gatehouse. It's a half round arch connected to the curtain wall which the moat flows through. A pier would have been connected to a draw-bridge to pass over the moat. The gatehouse was rebuilt in the early 13th Century, with the second floor holding a lifting mechanisim for the Portcullis. The chambers to the north side of the passage were added for the guards guarding the prison below.
