A gate was contructed guarding the southern approaches to the castle, this was called the Barbican Gate. This gatehouse was built as a single cylindrical tower with barbican- defences of a forward tower and bridge. By the 13th century, design of castle gates was further developed. The twin-tower gatehouse with the passage between became the standard.
