Probably as part of the building of the Great Hall in the 13th century, the tower was redeveloped as a Solar or Apartment. The four floors were linked by a spiral staircase. They were heated by fireplaces. The entrance porch from the casltle yard was built over a steep sloping path to the cellar, and the floors above had a gallery leading to a grand entrance to the Great Hall.
