Turtles have developed so well that they haven't changed since prehistoric times. If a turtle feels threatened it will hide in its shell, but it can still feel pain as there is a layer of skin outside its shell. Turtles have a good sense of smell but unlike other reptiles they can see colours. If attacked turtles make a hissing sound. They don't have teeth but many have sharp jaws that work just as well. Not all turtles are slow, in fact some turtles would be faster than humans. Fast turtles are the soft shelled type. Some turtles live longer than humans.
