Your first step should be to know what a Husky should look like. Click on the link at the bottom of this page for the breed standard. It gives you chapter and verse on what a Husky should look like and why.
Buy from a reputable breeder. A good place to meet them is at a local championship dog show. The Kennel Club can tell you where and when the next one is on. Take your time, remember you will have this dog for up to sixteen years. Have a good image in your minds eye of what you want. Then seek until you find.
It is vital that you see hip and eye scores for the sire and dam of any pup that you're thinking of buying.
The reasons are as follows: Like any breed, Siberian Huskies can be prone to disorders that can be passed on genetically. This is not to say that it will happen to any dog you buy, but it can occur and it is wise to take any steps possible to reduce the risk. Hip Scores are a way of measuring the likelihood of a dog developing hip displacia. A degenerative condition that can be painful for the dog, and will bring the owner a lot of anguish. Eye Scores because you want to rule out the likelihood of the dog developing Cataracts or Glaucoma, neither of which you would want to happen to your dog.
The breeder should have certificates to prove the pups are registered and have all shots up to date. When you go to collect the pup be sure to fill out the transfer of ownership form before leaving the premises, bring it with you and post it to the Kennel Club with the appropriate fee and original registration certificate.
It is a good idea to be flexible on whether you buy a pup or an adult. If you are looking for a Husky and there is a good adult available it may prove to be a worthwhile option.
Whatever you buy, interesting times lay ahead.
