PLAY-OFF DETAILS
2002 Junior B Final
Sunday, October 6th
Westmeath overpower the Royals in the Junior B Final at Gaelic Park, Bronx.
Meath GFC of New York were unable to stop a very determined Westmeath team in the NY Junior B Final at Gaelic Park, Bronx. The Royals settled quickly by scoring three points in the first couple of minutes. Westmeath sprung back to equal matters and then enjoyed a spell of dominance midway through the half by scoring a goal and four points. Meath responded in kind by driving home a goal and adding two further points. At the half, Westmeath were leading by one point. (Westmeath 1-07 Meath 1-06). The second half was a more one sided affair with Westmeath overpowering their rivals in most sectors of the field. The Royals added a further three points while Westmeath tallied on 1-07. Westmeath's dominance was aided by a number of their up and down senior players. Final score Westmeath 2-14 Meath 1-09.
Meath Team: Ciaran Gaughan, Paddy Melligan, Seamus Bruin, Anthony Gaughan; Andy O'Grady, Jamie Shaw, Ollie O'Brien; John Murphy, John Symth (0-01); Aidan Kiely, Shane McInerney (0-04), Davy Dunne (Capt.); Sean Coffey, Brian Newman (1-04), Stevie Kane. At 12.00 noon on Oct 6th Meath will take to the field against local midland rivals Westmeath in the Junior B Final.
Sunday, September 22nd - Junior 'B' Semi-Final at Gaelic Park
Semi Final (after extra time)
Roscommon 1-16 Westmeath 2-20 (prior scheduled game of Sunday, September 15th postponed due to flooding at Gaelic Park. Subsequently, the game was abandoned after 17 mins. of play on Thursday, September 19th at Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx due to a late start and jersey mix up.)
Sunday, September 8th - Semi Final
Meath surge to the Junior B Final by beating old rivals Dublin in the curtain
raiser at Gaelic Park. Score line: Meath 0-12 Dublin 2-04. It was just four
weeks earlier
when these sides met in the last game of the (Group A) league stages. At that
outing, Dublin had a very comfortable win over their arch rivals. However, on
this
occasion, Meath raced into a six point lead while Dublin failed to register
a score until the twentieth minute. At half-time, Meath were in front by four
points (0-08 to
1-01).
In the second half, Meath started strong but Dublin fought back before finally
succumbing to a two point defeat. Dublin will be disappointed having lost
to Meath at the quarter finals in 2001, executing a sure revenge plan in the
qualifier stages in early August and then falling victim to the Royals at the
play-off's, once
again.
Meath panel versus Dublin: Ciaran Gaughan, Paddy Melligan, Mickey Rennicks,
Anthony Gaughan, Ken Caulfield, Jamie Shaw, Seamus Bruin, John Murphy
(0-01), John Symth (0-01), Aidan Kiely, Shane McInery (0-04), Andy O'Grady (0-01),
Sean Coffey, Brian Newman (0-05, 1 free) and Stevie Kane. Subs: Ollie
O'Brien for Aidan Kiely and Eddie Travers for Sean Coffey.
Wednesday, September 4th - Quarter Final
Meath beat a very well fancied Rockland team at Van Cortlandt Park on a score
line of 2-08 to 1-6 to reach a semi final spot versus the Dubs. Rockland promptly
began proceedings by scoring 1-1 before Meath replied with two goals and points
before the end of the half. On the resumption, Meath added more scores before
Rockland launched a comeback. As the end drew near, Meath had enough in store
to register a five point victory.
Meath panel versus Rockland: Chris Clarke, Paddy Melligan, Mickey Rennicks,
Anthony Gaughan, Ken Caulfield, Jamie Shaw, Seamus Bruin, John Murphy, John
Symth, Aidan Kiely, Shane McInery, Davy Dunne, Sean Coffey, Brian Newman and
Stevie Kane. Subs: Ciaran Gaughan for Chris Clarke

Quarter Final Matches
Dublin defeated St. Raymonds on Friday, August 23rd at Paddy's Field, Bronx
to reach a spot in the semi finals. Apparently, St. Raymonds were leading by
four points with a couple of minutes remaining and allowed Dublin in for a quick
goal and two points to end up losing by one. In the proceedings, Dublin had
two players sent off and will miss the semi final match.
Astoria Gaels vs. Westmeath at Gaelic Park on Sunday, September 1st. This match
was previously scheduled for Sat. August 24th at Paddy's Field.
Meath GFC of NY vs. Rockland on Wednesday, September 4th at Van Cortlandt Park,
Bronx. To date, this match up has been canceled twice.
Brooklyn Shamrocks vs. Roscommon (replay) on Wednesday, September 4th at Paddy's
Field.
Saturday, August 3rd
Meath GFC of NY were comprehensively beaten by Dublin in their fifth and final
Group "A" league game of the 2002 season at Rockland on Saturday evening
last.
Scoreline: Meath 1-03 Dublin 3-12.
Dublin were very eager to seek revenge for their defeat to the Royals at the
quarter final stages in 2001. The Dublin team with a squad of twenty-five plus
players
were fully focused and prepared for this Saturday evening outing. Going into
the game, Dublin had seven points secured from their prior four games and were
assured
of a play-off spot, irrespective of the result versus Meath. Obviously, the
outcome of the game against Meath last year was playing on their minds all season
and a
great motivational factor against the Royals on this occasion. Meath on the
other hand, made life a little tougher on themselves by not having all of their
key players
present and available for selection at the start of the game. As a result, Dublin
punished Meath throughout this encounter. Meath battled hard to resolve matters,
scored a penalty near the end but it wasn't to be their night.
It's not all gloom and doom for the Meath lads. Despite their last two losses,
Meath have managed to qualify for the play-off's stages for the third straight
year by
coming third in Group "A". The qualification particulars are not yet
available.
Meath panel versus Dublin: Davy Byrne, Ollie O'Brien, Mickey Rennicks, Anthony
Gaughan, Andy O'Grady, Davy Dunne (Capt.), Paddy Melligan, Shane McInery,
John Murphy, Niall Hand, Dara Bennis, Owen O'Neill, Brian Clarke, Aidan Kiely
and Stevie Kane. Subs: Brian Newman, Seamus Bruin, John Symth, Jamie Shaw,
Sean Coffey & Ciaran Gaughan.
Tuesday, July 16th
Meath GFC of NY lost their first game of the 2002 season to Roscommon at Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx. Scoreline: Meath 0-03 Roscommon 1-07.
Having easily accounted for Galway a few days earlier in Paddy's Field, Meath
GFC of NY were forced to take on a full strength Roscommon team without the
services of three of their regulars. This included the midfield duo of Jamie
Shaw and John Symth who picked up injuries against Galway. Several key positional
changes were required to account for the missing regulars and this had a negative
bearing on Meath's overall performance against Roscommon. The Meath lads,
many of which were playing out of their normal positions competed with passion
but could not sustain a Roscommon team that played with purpose throughout the
sixty minutes. This was a key game for Roscommon in order to keep their hopes
alive for qualification within the group. Within this group of six, the top
two are
assured a qualification spot.
The next and final group game for Meath GFC of NY is versus old foes Dublin
who'll be eager to seek revenge for their defeat against the Royals in the two
game
quarter final saga, last year. With five points secured out of a possible eight
and no guarantee of qualification yet, Meath will need to be at their very best
against
Dublin to notch a berth in the play-off stages.
Team: Team: Chris Clarke, Eddie Travers, Mickey Rennicks, Anthony Gaughan,
Andy O'Grady, Seamus Bruin (0-01), Ollie O'Brien, Shane McInery, Davy Dunne
(Capt.), Davy Byrne (0-01), Brian Newman (0-01), Neil Hand, Brian Clarke, Ciaran
Gaughan and Stevie Kane Subs: Colm Timmons for Brian Clarke.
Friday, July 12th
Meath GFC of New York power on in the Junior B Group 'A' League with a resounding
eleven point victory over Galway at Paddy's Field last Friday evening. The
final score was Meath 1-19 Galway 1-8.
After thirty minutes of play, Meath lead by a point (0-9 to 1-5). On the resumption,
Meath immediately hit their peak to score an additional 1-8 while Galway only
managed three points. Meath's overall fitness, strength and directness on play
was the difference to which Galway had no answers. Meath will now face Roscommon
on their next outing.
Team: Chris Clarke, Ollie O'Brien, Mickey Rennicks, Anthony Gaughan, Davy Dunne,
Seamus Bruin, Paddy Melligan, Jamie Shaw (1-1), John Symth, Andy
O'Grady, Shane McInery (0-10), Eddie Travers, Sean Coffey, Brian Newman (0-5)
Stevie Kane (0-02) Subs: Neil Hand (0-1) for John Symth, Davy Byrne for
Andy O'Grady and Brain Clarke for Anthony Gaughan.
Tuesday, July 2nd
Under extremely hot and humid conditions (95 degrees Fahrenheit with 90% humidity)
at Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx, Meath GFC of New York drew with
Stamford. Score line: Meath 1-08 Stamford 0-11.
The Meath lads were very lucky it wasn't a loss because they let a four point
lead (from midway through the second half) go and kicked a number of wides during
the
last 10 minutes of play. Stamford notched their vital (eleventh) point to tie
up matters in the last minute. The Meath lads were down after the game but a
point was
secured and the unbeaten record for 2002 holds strong. The remaining games are
against: Dublin, Roscommon and Galway, all of which are pending a confirmed
date and time.

to control the game and led by two points before the referee blew it up. This
game
will be replayed at a later date.

side at Van Cortlandt Park, Bronx on a score line of 0-07 to 0-06. At half time,
The

pressure to tie the game briefly but Meath added a point to secure the game
as
darkness fell on a very cold and windy April evening.
