On May 31, Sister Catherine Courtney celebrated the 50th anniversary of her Religious Profession in the Columban Sisters’ convent in Magheramore, Wicklow.  Many family members from her native Kerry and from as far away as the United States joined Catherine and the community for the celebration.

The Jubilee Mass was celebrated by Fr Pat Donoghue and the homily was given by Sr. Patricia Sweeney.  Members of Catherine’s family did the Readings, carried up the gifts in the Offertory Procession and read the Prayers of the Faithful.  After Mass, Catherine’s family and friends joined with the sisters in a special festive meal.

Catherine was born in Annascoul, Co. Kerry and received her early education there and at the Presentation Convent in Dingle. She joined  the Columban Sisters in 1950. After Profession she did her teaching degree in the Craiglockhard Institute in Scotland.  She was then assigned to the Philippines. There she spent her whole life working in the various schools and colleges of the Columban Sisters and in her free moments being involved in retreat work and prison visitation.

Catherine now lives in Magheramore where she still continues her work with prisoners through letter writing and advocacy on their behalf.
