PARISH hurling final: For the first time in 11 years the hurlers of the parish crossed swords to do battle in a once off game for the parish hurling cup. The match was played on Sunday last before a sizeable crowd at the local field where the combination of Gardenfield, Camas, and the Monagea road defeated the Barnagh, Killoughteen and Strand 15 in what was a keenly contested and sporting game with many fine scores and "friendly" tussles. On St. Stephen's Day, a huge crowd was treated to some exciting football (and rugby) at the annual charity match between Monagea and St. Kieran's at Newcastle West. This year the money collected was going to the Eimer Kelly fund.
After the match a group of over 20 Wrenboys set off to collect for the fund also. After visiting the pubs of Ardagh, Carrigkerry and Newcastle West their final stop was Strand, where they put on some marvellous entertainment. At the end of the day over £4,200 was collected at the match and by the Wrenboys for the Eimer Kelly fund. Well done to everybody who participated and supported this worthy cause.
Monagea G.A.A. club held their A.G.M. at Monagea community centre on Friday night last. The county junior football trophy took pride of place at the top table. A very successful year was reported by all the outgoing officers. The following officers were elected for 2002. President - Edward Keane; vice presidents - Fr. Irwin and Liam Hough; chairman - Pat King; vice-chairman - John Hough; secretary - David Hough; assistant secretary - Connie Murphy; treasurer - Eddie Hogan; assistant treasurer - Padraig Kennedy; P.R.O. - Cathal O'Sullivan.
