Clogga School

Clogga school was situated in the north of Clogga. It was a primary school whos cachement area included Clogga, Kilnaspic, Tubrid, Barronswood, Cashel, Knockhouse, Knockanure, Ardera and Nicholastown. It was opened in 1888 due to the increase in population. It served many families through the years until its closure in 1968.

The building consisted of two separate classrooms. One classroom served the junior infants up to 2nd class the other served 3rd class up to 6th class. It had a play area at the back. The building now has been converted to a house and is still occupied.

During the schools existence it always had two teachers, one for each classroom. The school had many teachers during its time, some of whom were an asset to the local pupils and some whom the past students would like to forget. Teachers at Clogga school included:
Mr. Andrew Daly, Mrs. Phelan, Mr. Peter Mulqueen, Mrs Mulqueen, Mr. Doherty, Mrs. Williams, Mr. Nicholas Knox, Mrs. Phlean and Mrs Hyland.

Sport in Clogga School

Sport was always played in Clogga school, mainly hurling. In 1944 a schools league was setup.
Here Are Some Reports from the Time:

July 1944: At a meeting presided over by William Quinn, in the C.Y.M.S. Hall, it was unanimously decided to form a Schools League for the Parish with teams from Mooncoin, Carrigeen, Clogga and Clonmore Schools and it was intimated the local Senior Hurling Club were presenting a valuable set of hurleys to the winners. Admission charges. Adults 3d. children 1d.

July 1944:At Clonmore. Parish Schools League. Clogga 6-1, Carrigeen 4-0. Referee: W.J. Cleere. Good exhibition with Messrs. Séan Maher N.T. Carrigeen and Denis o' Doherty N.T. Clogga in charge.

1944:At Grange: Parish schools league. Clogga beat Clonmore.

1944:At Clogga(Pat Walsh's field), Parish Schools League Final. Mooncoin 6-1, Clogga 1-2. The main features of the final were the stylish overhead striking and the speed and elusiveness of the Mooncoin fowards. The presentation of the hurleys at C.Y.M.S by Canon M. Drea.
Clogga: T. Hogan (captain), W. & P. Murphy, J. Walsh, P. Gilmartin, J. Barden, J. Barden, J. Reddy, T. Power, J. Quilty, T. Crowley, Dick Tobin, W. Fitzgerald, W. Hearne, J. Walsh, T. Quilty. Clogga had four changes from the 1st round against Carrigeen.
