LEINSTER Under 21 football Championship reaches the quarterfinal stages at the weekend. In a very appetising game, Kildare play neighbours Offaly at St. Conleth's Park, on Saturday commencing at 3 p.m.
In the opening round of the championship Kildare were pitted against holders of the Leinster title and seeking a third title on the trot, Westmeath, who fielded many of their successful minor players and were warm favourites going into the game.
Kildare however, fielding five players who are members of the senior panel, including midfielder and team captain Ronan Sweeney, dominated the game from the outset and together with goals by John O'Donoghue and Sweeney from the penalty spot, went on to take a commanding lead.
Further scores from the in form Kenneth Donnolly, who operated very successfully in the number fourteen jersey, Kildare went on to lead by 2-8 to 0-5 at the interval. Westmeath played their best football in the second half and despite being reduced to fourteen players at the three-quarter stage, they put the Kildare side under tremendous pressure. However, Pauric Malarkey and Mick Wright stood firm in defence as Kildare held out for a 2-9 to 1-9 victory.
Offaly will pose a different challenge. They are fielding five players who are also members of the senior panel and at this stage of the competition will be difficult to oppose. If Kildare play to their full potential for the duration of the game, they are in with a great opportunity of reaching the semi finals of the competition.
National Hurling League
Round three of the Allianz National hurling league is arranged for Fr. Brennan Park on Saturday with Kildare playing Carlow. To date in the competition Kildare are undefeated. Having defeated Louth in the opening round, they travelled North to Down on Sunday last to play the home county. In a top class contest, the teams served up a very exciting game of hurling. The teams were on level terms at the interval 1-4 to 0-7. In an action packed second half, the teams were on level terms on five occasions. Liam Clarke and Brian Braniff quickly canceled a Tony Spain goal early in the second half with similar scores. Kildare continued to impress and looked likely to hold out for victory until Braniff scored that late goal, which gave the teams a share of the league points at Ballycran.
Carlow lost out to Wicklow at Dr. Cullen Park on Sunday last on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-14. It was late scores by Johathan O'Neill and John O'Toole, which gave Wicklow a 2-13 to 1-14 victory. In their opening game in the league Carlow were most impressive in their 3-13 to 1-7 victory over Roscommon.
Pat Coady was their top scorer with 1-8, as Carlow led for long periods of the game. Carlow and Kildare met in the opening rounds of the Keogh Cup. Kildare emerged victorious convincingly. However, Carlow will have improved a lot in the meantime and it will be interesting to see how much Kildare have also improved since that Keogh Cup meeting.
Leinster Minor Football League
The Leinster minor football league commences on Saturday with Kildare playing Dublin at a Dublin venue. The Kildare management team of Tom Cribben, Tony Moore, Pauric Gill and Mick Dunne has combed the county in an effort to get the best possible team to represent the county in the forthcoming championship match against Meath at Navan. They have held a number of trials and challenge games and are in the process of selecting the panel. Dublin will pose a good challenge.
Leinster Leader Cup semi-finals
The Leinster Leader semi finals are arranged for the weekend with county champions Moorefield now bidding to complete the league and championship double. They travel to Clane to play a Carbury team who was defeated in the championship by finalists Kilcock. The second semi final is arranged for Ballymore Eustace with county finalists Kilcock taking on a St. Laurences team who were only defeated by Moorefield by a narrow margin, following a replay.
U21 Football Championship
The under 21 football championship continues on Sunday with Confey enjoying home advantage against Balyna while Sallins fielding many of their successful junior team members who won the Leinster title, play St. Edwards. Ellistown take on the Caragh/St. Kevins combination, while the Athy/Ballykelly game is refixed for Rheban.
