I am new to web design so don't expect anything fancy. This is just a bit of information about my home town.

GABH ABHAILE

An Cheathrú Rua is a village in Conemara on the west coast of Ireland (in County Galway). Known in English as Carraroe.

Here most of us speak Irish (Gaeilge) as our first language. (An Irish speaking region in Ireland is called a Gaeltacht.)   In my grandmothers time Irish was the only language spoken.  Now everybody can speak English fluently.  Every summer hundreds of young students come to learn Irish in the Summer Colleges [COLAISTE CHIARÁIN & COLAISTE CHOLUMBA]- Adults learn too in ÁRAS MHÁIRTÍN UÍ CHADHAIN (An Acadamh), with many foreign students attending during the summer.

An Cheathrú Rua is popular with tourists.  The peninsula has two hotels, and many B&B’s.  There are three grocery shops, if you want anything else Galway City is not far away.

There are many good beaches- "An Dóilín" is unusual as the sand is made of fine “coral”. Other beaches have fine soft sand. I recommend An Tismeáin. (See map beaches marked) You can go to the Aran Islands from Ros a' Mhíl village nearby.

History:

One notable event - Battle of Carraroe (Cath na Ceathrú Rua)in 1880.  When more than 400 tenents fought (police) against the rent and evictions ordered by the Landlord Kirwan.  One woman was killed.
