Schuberth Concept Helmet Audio modification....by John Moylan, 14th August 2002
Having taken the plunge and bought the bike, the helmet, and the T-shirt, I decided I might as well get the intercom. One Autocom Pro M1 system , many hundreds of Euro's and several hours at the kitchen table with the soldering iron later, I was ready.
Now I'm armed with a BMWR1100RT with integral Radio/Cassette (with handlebar remote), and I can switch the audio from speakers to helmet to mute via the dash mounted switch. And as the phone (Siemens S35) is also wired in (with charger), I can take/make calls on the move. The Autocom unit mutes the music for the phone, and resumes after the call, and also semi-mutes the music once the rider or passenger speak (Vox operated). Once you've had your first late night call for directions for the last few miles of a long trip in a foreign place, and got a running commentary like this.....
- tell me how to get to your house?...
- are you at the roundabout?
- Yes?
- then go left...
- OK..
- go on a few hundred yards
- O.K...
- see the house with the Red door ?
- Yes...
- well, that's it, you've arrived..!!)
...You'll wonder how you ever managed without it.
O.K., some pics....(click on them for full size versions)
Concept1 shows the finished article, sans
head, of course...
Concept2 shows it, but with a head
inserted this time.....
Concept3 shows detail of how the boom
mike gets from inside the helmet to, well, the front. To
do this involved totally gutting the innards of the helmet so you could see how
it was constructed. The installation of the mike then involved boring a
very long hole through the polystyrene cheek piece and fishing it through from
the front of the helmet. Then the mike was plugged into the loom of the
headset.
Concept4 is just a side shot of
the boom mike installation
Concept5 is a shot of the inside of the
helmet. Can't see anything ? - that's the idea !! You're looking at
the right ear, from the bottom front of an open helmet.
Concept6 is a shot of the corresponding
area on the left hand side of the helmet with the lining pulled back, and
you can just see the speakers to the left of the chinstrap, and in a white
'pocket' I scooped out with the soldering iron - the boom mike is just visible
on the r.h.s. of the picture....
Oh, did I tell you that the Concept has these pockets as standard - they're just
not located over a normal persons ears !!...
Concept7 is a last exterior shot of the helmet and the 'tail'
which is the connection lead for the Autocom unit. This is just a short
lead coming from the helmet loom, and which I've threaded out between the
draught excluder/collar that runs around the base of the back of the
helmet. No drilling or gluing etc, the collar is flexible and bends around
the cable easily...
