October 2007 - New Radiohead album to be sold on line for whatever you want to pay for it!!!! |
English rock band Radiohead are offering their fans to download their latest album In Rainbow via Internet for the price they would want to pay for the group's music.
The digital version of the album will be made available for downloads on the band's website inrainbows.com on 10 October. It can be purchased for as little as one-dollar .
The band has said that the payment for downloads will be accepted only through credit cards. A specialedition box set called Discbox, including double vinyle and CD versions of the 10-song album, will also be shipped on 3 December. The traditional CD version of 'In Rainbows' will be released early next year, reports Variety magazine.
So far, EMI's Capitol Records has released the band's seven previous albums, of which the past three have charted in the top three in the US. However, 'Radiohead' are not relying upon any label, wholesaler and retail operations this time. The magazine report suggests that the decision of not associating with any label exposes the band to the risk of their music being downloaded by the fans for far less than the reasonable rate.
The group also faces the threat of piracy, adds the report. No advance copies of In Rainbow are being made available to the media or radio stations. The band has neither chosen a distributor for the physical copy of their album, not have they concluded any deal with any digital service. In Rainbow has been produced by Nigel Godrich, who has worked with 'Radiohead' for more than a decade. (Back to Top) |

July 2007 - New Prince album given away free with newspaper |
Sony BMG U.K. will not handle Prince's upcoming album release after a national British newspaper struck a deal to give the CD away. Columbia in the United States recently struck a worldwide deal, understood to cover just the new album, "Planet Earth." The major's U.K. company had sought, and has now achieved, an exemption from the terms of that deal, a spokesman for Sony BMG tells Billboard.com.
"The Prince album will not be released in the U.K.," the spokesperson says. "It's a one-off situation."
The unusual development is a direct response to a deal the Mail on Sunday is understood to have sealed with Prince's representatives, which will see the 10-track CD distributed as a "covermount" with an unspecified edition of the newspaper.
When asked if the newspaper would continue to covermount core catalog releases in the future, Miron said, "Yes. I think we've been able to demonstrate that we've got a commitment to music and a passion for music."
The Prince release, however, is threatening to blow up into another industry dispute.
Paul Quirk, co-chairman of the U.K.'s Entertainment Retailers Association, used his keynote speech yesterday at the London Calling conference to condemn the latest "covermount." Having said the news "beggars belief," he added, "If it turns out to be the case, The Artist formerly known as Prince should know that with behavior like this, he will soon be the Artist Formerly Available in Record Stores."

March 2007 - IRMA wins landmark ruling in UK on illegal imports, against CDWOW |
| The Irish Recorded Music Association (IRMA) in partnership with BPI, the UK record companies' trade association have won their court case against CDWOW, the online music retailer who was found in contempt of court after repeatedly breaching undertakings to cease illegal importing.
The case centred on the retailer's practice of parallel importing - selling CDs to Irish and UK customers that have not been manufactured in the European Economic Area (EEA). In this case the CDs were imported from the Far East.
In reference to the contempt of court claims, the High Court Judge pointed to "strong evidence that CDWOW was committing widespread breach of the undertakings... when the contempt application was launched" and that "CDWOW had taken no effective steps to ensure compliance with the undertakings even after an application for contempt had been served".
The full sum for fines, costs and damages are to be decided at a hearing in early July. The judge ordered CDWOW to pay a £150,000stg immediately towards legal costs.
Commenting on the ruling, Mr Dick Doyle, Director General of IRMA said: "We took this case, in the UK because Mr Philip Robinson is based there and its assets are there…we are delighted with the outcome. It sends a clear message to all companies engaged in illegally importing music CDs and DVDs into Ireland from outside Europe - you are breaching copyright law and you will be caught."
Mr Willie Kavanagh, Chairman IRMA said: "This judgment is very important as it helps defend legitimate retailers in Ireland who are respecting the law, against illegal and unfair competition."
