Community Groups
In a small community like ours, community groups play a large part in the
lives of a lot of people. They organise events and activities for young
and old. Below is a brief outline of the roles of the various community
groups active in our area.
Community Action Group
In 1995 a group of
people gathered together to form a commitee to discuss the needs of the
people in the community. This group consisted of people from all
organisations in the area, namely the ICA, GAA, Community Games and Tidy
Towns. This group is called the Community Action Group.
The main aims of the group were to bring the community closer together
and to identify the needs of the area. Since 1995, we have been extremely
busy. The local Scout Group was formed with the help of the group. They
also hold various events to cater for people of all ages, namely Table
Quiz nights, Card Drives, Adult Education classes and an annual Summer
Sports and Open Field Day.
ICA
The ICA (Irish
Countrywomens Association) hold meetings and events regularly. From time
to time they have talks or demonstrations on many varied topics of
interest.
GAA
The GAA was founded in Milltownpass
in the late 1970's and in the space of around 5 years they had progressed
up to senior level. During the late 80's and early 90's the club won
numerous underage titles.
The GAA enter teams in the Westmeath Leagues and Championships in
almost all grades of competition. At adult level they have 2 teams. At the
moment these teams are Div 3 and Div 5 in the all county leagues and
Intermediate and Junior for the championships. The club also fields an U21
team in the championship.
The underage club has which been very successful in recent times,
enters teams in the grades U12, U14, U16 and U18. They also have teams in
U10 and U8. each year the U10's play in various tournaments in the county
while the U8's play only a few challenge matches.
Community Games
The Community games movement in Milltownpass is also
quite successful of late. The highlight being the rounders team which
captured the all Ireland bronze medals in 1998.
The community games enter individuals or teams into many of the
competitions in both winter and summer sports. Every year they hold events
like a sports day or an art competition to see who should compete for
Milltownpass at County level.
Tidy Towns
The Tidy Towns group in conjucntion with FAS oversee the landscaping and general
tidiness of the village. Every year they are entered in the National Tidy
Towns competition and have had a little success at Westmeath level to
date.
