Estimation Of Suspended Solids In The Untreated Water
Apparatus:
One litre untreated waterFilter Paper
Conical Flask
Beaker
Filter Funnel
Balance
Method
Weigh as accurately as possible a sheet of suitable filter paper.
Set up apparatus as shown in diagram.
Take 1 litre of untreated water and filter it through the weighed filter paper.
Remove the funnel from filter paper and dry it completely in a warm place.
Reweigh the filter paper.
Calculate the mass of solid material i.e. increase in mass.
Work out the mass of solid material per litre.
Results:
Mass of filter paper = 0.8 grams
Mass of filter paper and suspended solids = 0.9 grams
Mass of suspended solids = 0.1 grams= 100mg
Mass of suspended material in 500 cm3 = 100 mg/500 cm3
Mass of suspended material in 1 litre = 200 mg/L.
