The History Of Destiny's Child

The original name of Destiny's Child was Girls Town. The group first started with two members: Beyonce and La Tavia. Kelly, then joined in 1992. La Toya then joined in 1993.The girls were just 9 years of age at the time but showed that their lust for fame and love of music could take them to the top. The girls practised every night of the week for most of their childhood, only stopping for something to eat or rest. Beyonce's father and mother believed in the band so much that their father left his job to become full time manager of the band, leaving Beyonce's mother as the only form of income to fund the girls and the family.

Times were hard and eventually they had to sell the family home and move into a smaller house a little while away. It didn't matter how hard they found it to cope they always believed in themselves and knew one day that the rest of the world would too.

They entered many competitions and finally got the chance to perfume on the American show "Star Search" to win a record deal. Sadly the band lost out to another band which we have never heard about over here. After their defeat, hearts were down but they continued to practise their vocals believing one day when the time was right that it would all pay off.

Finally over a high school intercom the four girls were all called to the principal's office, they had got a record deal. They were ecstatic and left that day to record their first album. However the happiness did not last. The record company dropped them and they were back to square one. Once again, they refused to give up and practised more and more,

Then as Beyonce's mother was looking through the Bible she came across the name Destiny, She immediately knew that that was the perfect name for the band. The band renamed themselves Destiny's Child and luck seemed to flow their way not long after. In 1997 they signed with Columbia Records and recorded their songs on the album called "Destiny's Child" They had a track called "no no no" which they knew was their strongest on the album. Their record company wanted a remix and thought of Wyclef Jean as the perfect candidate. He took the song and made it famous with his vocals alongside those of Destiny's child. It reached a no.1 on the U.S Bill Boards. Their very first no.1 had arrived thanks to Wyclef.

After this there was no stopping Destiny's child. They went from strength to strength both mentally and vocally. They had matured and their lyrics had also. Other songs to top the boards are "Jumpin Jumpin", "Say My Name", "Bills Bills Bills", "Bug a Boo", "So Good" and "Get On The Bus". All of these tracks have reached no. 1's in both The U.S and in Europe and various other areas of the world. These tracks were from their second album and were compiled by the original members.

However the band were not getting along so well. The band was split two and two. Kelly and Beyonce on one side and La Toya and La Tavia on the other. They just seemed to grow apart more and more each moment spent together. A band working like this could not last much longer. In 1999-2000,the original members La Tavia and La Toya left Destiny's Child as a result. They complained that their manager Mr Knowles ( Beyonce's father), was treating the members of the band differently and they felt that they could no longer work like that. The two left and Beyonce and Kelly were left with an important decision to make: should the band continue and recruit new members or should they call it a day and end the band after nearly 10 years. They made the decision and felt that they had much more to offer the world. They continued and met two other singers Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin who joined the band. However 6 months after their new recruits had joined Farrah was booted out for not attending rehearsals and promotional gigs. The band had decreased to a trio.

The members are now Beyonce, Kelly and Michelle. This seems to be the strongest Destiny's Child has ever been. The band produced their third album with the new member Michelle which is titled "Survivor". It was so called because the two girls, Beyonce and Kelly felt that they could survive the break up of the band and all its changes. Their third album is very successful. Destiny's Child has won 2 Grammies for their track "Say My Name". Tracks on the "Survivor" album were written and co written by Beyonce but unlike the other album vocals was shared. This is obvious from their first track from that album, the song "Independent Women" where the vocals were split in three. Other songs to show this is "Bootylicious" which there were many remixes done and were very successful and "Emotions" the cover version of The Begees original. Their third album "Survivor" has gone quadruple platinum sine Jan 2002.

As a result Destiny's Child have won many awards at: the Mtv Awards, The U.S Bill Boards, the Grammies and many more. In 2002-2003,the band have decided to split up as Beyonce is starring alongside Mike Myers in the new Austin Powers movie yet to be announced later on .The band are suppose to get back together but after a few months to years, who knows? The other band members, Kelly is will be engaged in a solo career as will Michelle and Beyonce. It would be a great loss to lose this band but hopefully this will never happen!

Samantha Mumba

Samantha Mumba, the Irish Pop Princess, hit the charts two years ago. She was born to an Irish mother and a South African father and being a hyperactive child she was brought to the Billy Barry School of Performance at the age of four. When she was 16 Louis Walsh discovered her talent and she soon had a recording deal under her glittery belt. During this period she was performing alongside Westlife and Boyzone. She debuted with the song "Gotta Tell Ya", followed by "Body to Body", "Always Come Back To Your Love" all of which were off her debut album, "Gotta Tell Ya". Her new album "Come On Over", was released this year and off that she released "Come On Over" and "Lately". At the beginning of this year the rumour of her being the next Hollywood big shot came true as she was placed as the leading lady in the new Steven Spielberg film, "Time Machine" co-starring her little brother Omero who now has just got his own recording deal and will be releasing his first single mid-next year. These two are going to be big and anyone two dares step in their way better watch out! Best of luck in the future Sam!

Irish PopStars

Louis Walsh, a band manager from the west of Ireland began recruiting the new Irish version of Popstars last November. With "Hear Say" and "O wn" already huge smash hit bands in England and America Ireland was the next step.

Three judges Louis Walsh, Linda Martin and Bill Hughes choose six talented young singers aged between 18 and 24 among thousands of auditionees around Ireland. Every week, viewers around Ireland watched this programme to see how the auditionees got on. Each week Louis, Linda and Bill observed the young hopeful's singing, performing and interaction with the others. They got closer to choosing the final six by eliminating other auditionees. Choreographers were brought in to help them improve their dance routines and help the judges with their eliminations.

A fortune-teller visited the group and secretly predicted the six members of the group to be. She wrote the six members names down on a piece of paper and placed them in an envelope. After much discussion between the judges the final six were revealed but it wasn't until five weeks later the public were informed. Individually the judges arrived at each of young hopeful's houses to congratulate or condone them with the news. That night the six winners left their homes and met up at a private house in a secluded area away from the public eye. Sadly on the second day together one of the new female members "Nadine" confessed about her real age. When she first auditioned she informed the judges she was eighteen years old when in fact she was only 16 years old. That night Nadine had to leave the house and return home. She was replaced by another girl from Galway.

At a later stage Louis opened the envelope left by the fortune-teller. Her predictions were correct Sarah, Sinead, Emma, Liam, Kyle and Andy were the new Irish Posters. All they needed now was a name for the new band. After much debating they decided on the name "Six".

Their new single "Whole Lot of Lovin' " is due to be released at the end of February. Watch out for it!

Clean Up Your Act

You have probably all heard of hip-hop by now, a style of music fast taking over our airwaves. Hip-hop is basically a combination of heavy beats, often melodical instrumentals accompanied by a rapper who rhymes slang talk to the beat of the music.

Names like Dr Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Eminem, Busta Rhymes and Jay Z, among others have helped this style of music burst into the mainstream and I must admit I find myself to be quite an adept of the genre. However my problem lies with the lyrics.

I like the music but have a slight problem with the attitude which is often portrayed in the words of the songs. Up to recently, the problem was the overuse of bad language with the use of words I dare not write in this article, and this was bad enough. Even worse now is newcomer Eminem. The man is sick in the head. Any man rapping about talking to his daughter about how his strangled wife is just having a nap in the boot of the car is in my opinion demented.

This article may go against public opinion but it is how I feel.

The Beatles

Along with Elvis and Muhammad Ali they were the most famous people on earth, this was just one of the comments made by newspaper about perhaps the best band that ever was and ever will be. Their music has never died but has spawned a new generation of devoted fans born decades after the fab four first hit the charts.

Manager Brian Eptein signed them to EMI records in 1962. Paul McCartney, John Lennon (R.I.P), George Harrison (R.I.P), Ringo Star. It was unknown at that time that these four young men would become the four most loved and admired pop idols in this lifetime. Hitting the number seventeen spot with their first single 'Love me do' in the United Kingdom, their home country, was an achievement for any pop group of that time.

This hit was followed up by 'Please please me' which went to number two and later in 1963 the band had number one hits with 'She loves you', and 'I wanna hold your hand'. At the end of their mind blowing musical career they each had seventeen number ones under their belts. In 1970 they spilt but their names were and are known by almost every person who has ever taken any interest in the music scene.

During their career they were followed by screaming fans everywhere they went. The response to their music was phenomenal. During one of their concerts one of the sound men was said to have gone almost deaf in one ear because of the high pitched screaming of young people hoping their idols would take notice of them.
Tears drowned all these screams of happiness in the year 1981 when one of the main members of the band, John Lennon, was pronounced dead in hospital after receiving a gun shot wound. One of the greatest musical masters was gone and the space he left behind will perhaps never be filled. He was mourned by his adoring fans and will never be forgotten. His number one hit ' Imagine' is most certainly one of the greatest songs ever written.

On Monday 29th of November 2001 shock passed through the world as the death of another Beatle member was announced, George Harrison, another musical master in his own right. One of his most memorable songs ' As my guitar gently weeps' will probably be the song he will be most remembered for and rightly so as it truly is work of a musical genius.

I don't want to forget the other two members still alive today; Paul McCartney and Ringo Star are still, thankfully, with us. Ringo, who was the drummer in the band, is now also famous for taking the role of narrator in the children's television programme ' Thomas the Tank engine' and Paul is still writing music and his daughter Stella McCartney is a world famous fashion esigner. So these amazing people have contributed a lot more than pop songs to the people of the world.
