The commissioning of the new Irish Naval Ship LE Samuel Beckett P61

A ceremony to mark the naming and commissioning for the new Naval Service ship, the LÉ Samuel Beckett is underway in Dublin. The event, at the Samuel Beckett Bridge was carried out by a niece of Samuel Beckett, Caroline Murphy. The Taoiseach and Minister for Defence Enda Kenny attended today's event. The LÉ Samuel Beckett is the first of its class, an offshore patrol vessel. It is 90 metres long, weighs over 1,900 tonnes, and has a a maximum speed of 23 knots. It cost €54m.

Not to miss this historic event Herbert McManus got permission from the Doctors to leave Hospital for a few hours so he could attend the ceremony. Thanks to his colleagues in the Naval Association Neville Brennan and Fred Elliott who went to the Hospital at 0800hrs to get him dressed in his uniform and get him to the event in his wheelchair
