Tuesday 15th June Nenagh Tennis News

Aiden and Joan win Joe Doran Cup

Aiden Byrne and Joan O'Brien were the winners of the 2004 Joe Doran Cup at Nenagh LTC last week. David Hodgins and Mary Minogue were the runners-up.

It was a good final featuring players who had not previously featured in the final of the competition, so regardless of who won, it would have been a popular victory. As it happened, Aiden and Joan combined and played very well in coming through the group stages and then the quarter finals, semi-finals and final.

Hard luck on David and Mary who were equally impressive in the tournament and each no doubt will feature again.

Attending the finals were Michael Doran and Claire Doran who presented the cup and prizes. Matt Coffey, winner in 2003, but out of luck this year, was also on hand to congratulate the finalists.

Senior Open Week 2004

It's Senior Open Week time again. Full details are on the board. Nenagh Senior Open Week is sponsored this year jointly by Bank of Ireland and Bank of Ireland Savings and Investments.

There's entry forms, but also a large sheet on which local players may enter their names in the various events. Open Week will run from Saturday 26th June until Saturday 3rd July.

As usual, there's graded singles, doubles and mixed doubles, in addition to the handicap mixed events. Social events will include the now very popular bar-b-que on the Friday night of the tournament.
Bar-b-que tickets are free to all players, as it's factored into the entry fees of the tournament.

Inter Club Friendly Night this Wednesday

A big crowd will be in the club on this Wednesday night 16th June with the visit of a large number of players from newly formed club at Killoran in Portroe. They will be joined by players from Puckane, Killaloe-Ballina and Nenagh. Play starts at 7 pm and will continue all evening, involving almost 60 players.

Junior Social Tennis Evenings Continue

The Junior Social Tennis events will continue on this Thursday evening 17th June and on Thursday evening 24th June at 5.45 pm. These events, sponsored by Kelly'of Fantane, are for juniors aged 12 and over.

Just come along on the evening at 6.45. Entry fee is nominal at €1 per person. The competition will run until approximately 7.30.

The event of Thursday 24th will be a post exam evening event and will again be piazza evening, following on from the successful one held recently.

Inter-Club Scene Gears Up

The Summer Inter-Club activity will go into overdrive shortly. Nenagh has less teams competing in Munster competitions this Summer, but will have the usual quota of teams in Midland Tennis League.

First team into action in Munster was the Division IV mixed team who were out of luck in Ballypatrick last week. Nenagh had Patricia Quigley, Carmel Power, Pat Leamy and Joe Sherlock. Nenagh now go into the plate event here.

Meanwhile, Nenagh have a home fixture against Rushbrooke in the Mens Grade 4. That will be in Nenagh, possibly this weekend.

The Midland Tennis League (Divisions II, III, IV and V) will commence during the first week of July, immediately after Nenagh Open Week.
