TUESDAY 22nd June Nenagh Tennis News

Aiden and Joan win Joe Doran Cup

Aiden Byrne and Joan O'Brien were the winners of the 2004 Joe Doran Cup at Nenagh LTC last week. David Hodgins and Mary Minogue were the runners-up.

It was a good final featuring players who had not previously featured in the final of the competition, so regardless of who won, it would have been a popular victory. As it happened, Aiden and Joan combined and played very well in coming through the group stages and then the quarter finals, semi-finals and final.

Hard luck on David and Mary who were equally impressive in the tournament and each no doubt will feature again.

Attending the finals were Michael Doran and Claire Doran, who presented the cup and prizes. Tim Conway, President of the Club, and Matt Coffey, winner in 2003, also congratulated the finalists.

Senior Open Week 2004

It's Senior Open Week time again. Senior Open Week this year is being sponsored by Bank of Ireland and Bank of Ireland Savings and Investments, Nenagh.

Nenagh Senior Open Week is really the big competitive week of the year at the club, and affords the opportunity for local players to test themselves against new and varied opposition from other clubs. In 2003, most of the titles on offer went to visitors, so that's the yardstick which locals will be aspiring to better.

As usual, there's graded singles, doubles and mixed doubles, in addition to the handicap mixed events. Social events will include the now very popular bar-b-que on the Friday night of the tournament. And, in keeping up with the traditions of Wimbledon, there will be strawberries and cream free to all on Finals Day. Unlike Wimbledon, we don't charge for the strawberries and cream.

Entries for the tournament are still coming in at the time of writing. The draw will take place on this Wednesday night 23rd June and will be on the notice board by Thursday night.

Play is scheduled to commence on this Saturday 26th June. The organisers will be scheduling all first and some second round matches of the handicap mixed events, in addition to matches in other events, for sometime over the weekend.

I'm assured that they will be mindful of the Tipperary/Limerick hurling fixture on Saturday evening and will facilitate those wishing to go to the match. This may mean that matches will have to be played earlier on Saturday, and will certainly mean a busy day on Sunday.

Once again, the advice to players is to keep in contact with the club, and keep checking the notice board. Fixtures for Saturday will be up on Thursday evening, and Sunday's will be up on Friday evening.

Junior Social Tennis Evenings Continue

The Junior Social Tennis events will continue on this Thursday evening 24th June at 5.45 pm. There was a good turnout last Thursday, but the organisers are expecting bigger numbers on this Thursday as it follows on the completion of the Leaving and Junior Certificate Examinations.

This event is another piazza evening, sponsored by Kelly'of Fantane, and is for juniors aged 12 and over. Piazza and refreshments will follow the tennis competition. Names on the board preferably, but if you forget, come along for 5.45 pm.

Very Successful Visit from Portroe, Killaloe-Ballina and Puckane Players.

There was a big turnout of players in the club on Wednesday night last 16th June with the visit of a large number of players from newly formed club at Killoran in Portroe, and a number of players from Puckane and Killaloe-Ballina, in addition to local players.

The night, which featured many players new to tennis, was a very successful, and seemed to be enjoyed by all.

Inter-Club Scene Gears Up

The Summer Inter-Club activity will go into overdrive shortly. Nenagh has less teams competing in Munster competitions this Summer, but will have the usual quota of teams in Midland Tennis League.

Among the first team into action in Munster was the Division IV mens' team who beat Rushbrooke 3/1 in Nenagh on Sunday last. The Grade IV mens competition is the old Nationalist Cup competition. Nenagh's team on Sunday last was Bill Lonergan, James White, Joe Fogarty and Martin Ryan (Frolic).

Meanwhile Nenagh's Division VI Mixed Team were out of luck in Ballypatrick last week, going down 1/3 to a good local team. Nenagh had Patricia Quigley, Carmel Power, Pat Leamy and Joe Sherlock. Nenagh now go into the plate event here.

The Midland Tennis League (Divisions II, III, IV and V) will commence during the first week of July, immediately after Nenagh Open Week.
