The Proctor & Gamble sponsored Nenagh and District Inter Firms Tennis League concluded at the Nenagh club on Friday night last. There was a good turnout for the actual finals which took place in excellent tennis playing conditions.
Attending the finals on behalf of Proctor and Gamble were Greta Whelan, Eileen Molloy and Pepe Puente. Proctor and Gamble are very generous sponsors and their prizes were very much appreciated by all. Tim Conway, President of Nenagh LTC, thanked Proctor for its superb support of the Inter Firms event over the years.
Spillanes (Eamon Spillane, Philip O'Gorman, Margaret Quinn, Jane McGrath) were winners of Division I. Runners-up were the colour co-ordinated Red Devils (James Kennedy, Des Bayly, Deirdre McSherry, Liz Dwan).
Division II was won by a team with a classic tennis name, Lacoste. The team was Kieran Grace, Martin Ryan, Brid Galvin and Brid McSherry. Runnersup here were the Gracie Babes with Gordon Grace, Sean Prior, Marian Maloney and Catherine Sherlock.
Nenagh CBS Primary School (Eamon Dillon, Frank McGrath, Patricia Finn, Rita Quinn) were winners of Division III, and the runners-up were the Weakest Link who had Paul Royston, Kevin Heffernan, Anne O'Meara and Bernie Meagher. Just which of those 4 will be ditched for the next event is anyone's guess.
And in Division IV, which was ladies doubles only, the winners were Julie Donovan and Marian Winder. Runners-up were Kathleen Maloney and Liz Maher.
The Social Tennis Nights will resume at Nenagh LTC on this Wednesday night 19th May. By the time most people read this item, all places are likely to be filled for the night, unless there are late withdrawals. Check the notice board. The times and schedule will be on the notice board.
Play will go ahead again next Wednesday 27th May. Entries (on own) for the 27th are required by 9 pm on Monday night 25th. See sheet at clubhouse.
The Joe Doran Cup competition is the next format club competition in the club. This is a mixed event for members only, and is scheduled to take place on Thursday 10th and Friday 11th June. More details next week.
Nenagh were hosting a team from Powerstown/Lisronagh in the U.16 Community Games tennis on Sunday last. Nenagh won the fixture and will now have a home fixture against a team from Carrick on Suir on Sunday next in the Tipperary semi-final.
Nenagh's team was on Sunday was Darragh McLoughlin, Patrick Murphy, Rory Whelan, Ciara Corkery, Elizabeth Darcy and Tara Spain.
Meanwhile, a number of Nenagh junior members, who are also members of Limerick LTC, were involved in trials for U.14 and U.12 teams in Limerick recently. Conor Geaney will be on the club's U.12 team, while Ciara Corkery was chosen for the club's U.14 team. Tara Spain had to retire with an injury in the trials. Limerick LTC is the top junior club in Munster presently, and are holders of both the U.12 and U.14 Munster Cups.
Nenagh CBS U.19 team failed in its appeal re the Munster Schools semi-final. The issue was over their opponents playing order of merit. Meanwhile other team, Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh, lost the final 1/3 against PBC, Cork. Quite a number of other Tipperary schools featured in the finals, the results of which were:
