The Procter & Gamble Inter-Firms League began at the Nenagh club this week and will continue until Friday week 14th May. Play is scheduled in the club each evening (except Saturday). Members not playing in the league can avail of the courts at the 6 o'clock time slots as most fixtures are scheduled for either 7.30 or 9 pm.
Over 30 teams are competing and there's a special ladies doubles section for beginner/improver ladies. At the time of writing, there's 9 teams in division I (there was 10 originally), there's 12 teams in division II and 8 teams in Division III. And there's the special ladies section which makes up division 4.
The finals are scheduled for Friday week 14th May. Some play-offs begin Wednesday 12th, and the semi-finals are scheduled for Thursday 13th May.
Anne Fitzpatrick was in Belfast over the long weekend playing for Ireland in the Four Nations Veterans Internationals involving Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. Congratulations to Anne on this fine achievement. Anne of course is an experienced Veteran international players having represented Ireland in this event previously and in the Margaret Court Cup in Florida.
Anne will be very familiar with Belfast as she's off there again on the weekend of Friday 14th and Saturday 15th May to play in the Senior Veterans Interprovincial Championships.
Anne will have to be on her best behaviour both on and off court as also on the Munster team is her aunt, Alice Hogan from Thurles. Other Tipperary representatives on the team are Michael Murray, Tom Bolger and John Cooney from Hillview (Clonmel).
St Mary's Nenagh CMS had 2 teams in Munster Cup Semi-finals last week. Unfortunately, both were out of luck against Stella Maris who now advance to the finals in Cork later this month.
Tramore is a town which is producing more than its fair share of top junior tennis players at the moment, possessing a number of Irish champions and highly nationally ranked players (both boys and girls).
St Mary's U.14 team was Ciara Corkery, Roisin Dullea, Eimear Dwan and Tara Spain. The U.19 team team Anne Marie Darcy, Fiona Maher, Orla Walsh and Sarah Walsh. Well done to both sides on doing so well in the event.
Meanwhile, Nenagh CBS U.14 faced a similar fate also in Tramore in it's semi-final. Tramore CBS possessed Niall Murphy, Irish U.12 No 1 in 2003. However, the Nenagh lads put up a fine show and can hold their heads high, despite going under in the fixture. The team was Darragh Fitzpatrick, Matthew O'Connor, Patrick Murphy and Rory Whelan.
Nenagh CBS U.19 (Aiden Byrne, Michael Flynn, Martin Slattery, Philip O'Gorman) were beaten 3/1 by Colaiste on Spioraid Naoimh, Douglas in their semi-final. However, the Cork side may have played its team in an incorrect order and if that is found to be the case by the Munster competitions committee, the Nenagh lads could have another chance. We await the outcome.
