Facilities of Newmarket

The most popular facility by far for our age, which everyone is talking about, is ‘Safaris night-club' owned by Peggy and Michael Hourigan. Less than 2 years ago the club was burned down, taking with it a large source of entertainment and income. After many months rebuilding, it opened again in October much to the delight to the citizens of the town and the surrounding areas. It is now much larger with the capacity to hold over 3,000 people.

Other facilities in the town include 13 pubs and various shops. The town has two national schools, boys and girls. Last summer a grant was given by the Board of Education to renovate the girls' school. Money was also raised from various collections, organised by parents, staff and board of management.  The girls went to school above at the Convent until the school was ready. The two schools employ 11 teachers and over 200 pupils.

 K.A.N.D.U

K.A.N.D.U enables babies to relate with each other, and adults to relax and meet other people.  They have rules like no smoking, to have a happy atmosphere with the mothers and toddlers.  Children are not allowed unaccompanied at K.A.N.D.U. They have inside and outside insurance.  K.A.N.D.U means Kids and Adults Network of DUhallow.  The mothers and toddlers group in Boherbue was established in 1996 and has been developing ever since.  They have influenced four mothers to start a parents and toddlers group in Newmarket.  These four mothers are Kathleen Mc Auliffe (Chairperson), Elizabeth O’ Loughlin (treasurer-a treasurer is someone in charge of the accounts), Donna McCarthy (secretary), Gráinne Boyle (assistant secretary).  The group organization will start every Monday at the C.Y.M.S hall at around 10.30-12.30a.m.  The children will start with arts and crafts, which includes colouring, painting, marla and crafts for special occasions of the year.  Then the children play with toys, which are available to them, including tricycles, slides, a sand-pit, blocks and more interesting toys.  Then the parents and toddlers sit and they do a sing-along.  Much effort and lots of patience  has gone into the creation of K.A.N.D.U in Newmarket, including raising funds from local businesses in getting equipment and toys for the children.  They organize a lot of trips like  going to Trabolgan, Petting Farm and much more.  There are also trips for the parents like Bridget Jones Diary in the cinema.
