Teach Mhuire

Teach Mhuire provides accommodation for the disabled. It was officially opened on the 17th of November, 1992 by President (at that time) Mary Robinson. A committee was set up with the responsibility to construct a home for the disabled. The committee formatted plans to raise funds immediately. They purchased a site on the Kerry Road, which was not entirely suitable for this purpose and then received the present site at the Island Road from local businessman, Conor O Flynn, free of charge. They then sold the original site, which was a real boost to the fundraising, thanks to Mr. O'Flynn. The local community responded in a generous manner to the fundraising efforts, which included give-aways, concerts, dances, card drives and sponsored walks.

Teach Mhuire was developed with a main target in mind and that is to provide those who use it with accommodation away from home. Teach Mhuire is a bungalow with eight bedrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen , utility room, bathroom, specially designed and equipped for disabled needs and wide corridors to accommodate wheelchairs.

Teach Mhuire was opened in June 1992, with voluntary workers running weekend and mid-week breaks for disabled people from Charleville, Cope in Mallow and groups from Sarsfield Court in Cork. In later years the reins were handed over to Charleville Handicapped Association, who has been running services for the disabled for the past 35 years.
