Cashel V’s Newport
Mansergh Cup Semi-Final
Newport got off to a great start in the opening
minutes of this game with a drop goal from Shane Ryan, putting them 3 – 0 up.
In the next 20 minutes, Newport put Cashel under huge pressure and reaped 3
penalties as reward. These were
converted and this put Newport 12 – 0 ahead.
Cashel managed to get a try around 30mins into the first half, not
converted 12 – 5 to Newport. Once again
Newport’s pressure on Cashel was rewarded when Michael Ryan Bawn scored a try
just before half time, 17 – 5 to Newport.
The Second half got off to a miserable start with the rain coming
down. Newport kept the pressure on
Cashel who defended very will against the Newport attack. Cashel converted two penalties in the second
half but Newport defended well to the final whistle and the match finished 17 –
11 to Newport. Great result with a great performance by the team as a whole.
Sunday 8th October
Newport V’s Abbeyfeale
Munster Junior League
Newport opened
their league campaign at home to Abbeyfeale on a wet Sunday afternoon at the
Freigh field in Newport. Newport put
the first points on the board with a Shane Ryan converted penalty. Tom Ryan scored next with a try set up by a
great break from Dave August, Shane Ryan added the conversion. Newport led 10-0 after 20 minutes. The next try was one of the best seen in
Newport, Shane Ryan chipped the ball through the Abbeyfeale defence for Michael
Ryan Bawn to sheppard it over the tryline and touch it down. 15-0 to Newport. Abbeyfeale were next to
score when they converted a penalty just a half time. Half time score 15-3.
Midway through the second half after Abbeyfeale fumbled the ball, SuperSub Cian
O’Toole collected the ball, sprinted and dived under the posts to score
Newports third try of the day, converted by Shane Ryan. A stout Abbeyfeale
defence prevented Newport from gaining the bonus point. Final score 22-3.
Credit is due to Newport on their defence which held Abbeyfeale to only 3
points and prevented them from scoring trys.

Sunday 29th October
Newport V’s Clanwilliam
Mansergh Cup Final
Newport R.F.C won the Mansergh Cup on Sunday 29th October
with a outstanding performance against Clanwilliam F.C., one of the powerhouses
of Munster Junior Rugby. Newport opened the scoring with a try from second row
David O'Gorman in the early stages of the match. Shane Ryan converted to
give Newport 7-0 advantage. Clanwilliam returned it to level with a
converted try, which was answered by David Hickey grounding the ball for
Newports second try from a well developed maul 12-7. After some great mid field
play by both teams, Clanwilliam touched down for their second try which was
converted 12-14. In the last minutes of the first half Clanwilliam converted a
penalty. Half time score Newport 12 Clanwilliam 17.
Second half scoring was kicked off by a wonderful
try from Michael Ban, this drew the sides level 17-17. Newport and
Clanwilliam traded penalties to bring the score to 20-20. Deeply encamped in
Clanwilliam territory Shane Ryan dropped back into the pocket and put over a
well directed drop goal. Advantage Newport 23-20. Clanwillam threw everything
they had at the Newport defence but to no avail and failed to convert the
penalties they had been awarded. In response to this pressure Newport
forged their way back to the Clanwilliam try line thanks to a Brian Healy
clearance which was chased by Daragh Ryan and Michael Ban and grounded by
Michael Ban. This was the final score in the match which Newport won 28-20.
The Cup was presented to Captain Tom Ryan by Pat Flynn
former Chairman of the Munster Junior Committee. Congratulations to
Newport on such a fine performance by each member of the squad, Team Manager
Paul O’Gorman and Coach James Hallessey.
Sunday
5th November
St
Marys V’s Newport
Munster
Junior League
Sunday 5th November will be a day not to be
forgotten by Newport R.F.C, when the Mansergh Cup winning team, went to Grove
Island in Limerick to play St Mary’s R.F.C. and came away with a 72 – 0
victory. This phenomenal result was due
to 12 tries and 6 conversions.
The game started well for Newport, who went to
Corbally expecting a tough battle from St Mary’s. After 10 minutes of play the first try was scored, 5 minutes
later the second was scored and when the third try was touched down there was
hope of a bonus point. Not only did
Newport get the bonus point next, but there were 6 tries in total in the first
half. These were scored by Darragh
Ryan, Philip O’Brien, Michael Ryan, Tom Ryan (2) Capt and Brian Healy (not
listed in correct order), Shane Ryan added to this with two conversions. Half time
score 34 - 0
St Marys competed well for the first 10 minutes of
the second half, but when Newport ran in the first try of the second half the
flood gates were opened for another 5 tries.
St Marys just had no response for these scores. Michael Ryan kicked 3 conversions and Shane
O’Connor converted the last kick of the game.
The tries in the Second half were scored by Donnie O’Connell, Brian
Healy, Darragh Ryan, Philip O’Brien (2), and Cian O’Toole (not listed in
correct order). The final score recorded
by the referee was 72 – 0.
This was another fine display by Newport as a whole
team, the forwards played very well all round and did very well in line outs
and scrums, the backs passing was wonderful as was their running and ability to
see gaps in the opponents defense.

Newport
V’s Bandon
Munster
Junior League
Newport
were up against the holders of second place in Division 2 of the Munster Junior
League, Bandon, this weekend and they knew they would be playing against a team
with as much to loose as themselves, their unbeaten record. The first half was kicked off by Bandon and
it was easy to see that the game was going to be a battle of the front
eight. Newport gained an advantage when
they were awarded a penalty which was converted by Dave August to give them a
3-0 lead. Bandon got off the mark
shortly after this with a converted penalty 3-3. Newport made it 6-3 for the half time score when Shane Ryan converted the second penalty. The second half saw Bandon gain the edge over
Newport when they scored two penalties and a converted try, this brought the
score to 16-6. Just when Bandon had the
advantage, Newport dug deep and threw their all at Bandon. This resulted in the scoring of a try by
Philip O’Brien and a conversion by Dave August, it brought the score to 16-13,
two missed penalties by Newport meant the match ended 16-13 to Bandon. Newport however gained a bonus point and
