André Chapelon’s 242 A1 4-8-4 was by all accounts a remarkable locomotive. With its 21 tons axle load this 3-cylinder compound was capable of developing 5,500hp. Sadly the locomotive was withdrawn in 1960 and broken up surely one of the greatest acts of folly in the history of the steam locomotive.
