• Belvedere house and gardens - take Sligo road as far as Mullingar, then revert to Athlone (Adds about 10 miles, 12 minutes per AA to the journey)
• Village Hotel, or Castle, Tyrrellspass
• Loft restaurant, Kilbeggan (lovely homemade bread to be bought)
• Clonmacnoise: A tempting detour: AA say will add 25 mins to the journey (Already 4.5 hours before stops)
• Hodson Bay Hotel, or Radisson Hotel, Athlone
• Hayden's Hotel, Ballinasloe (exactly half way)
• Battle of Aughrim Interpretative Centre - must be visited at least once.
• Meadow Court Hotel, RHS before reaching Loughrea
• Raftery's, Blazer's Bar, Craughwell
• Moran's, Clarinbridge Bridge (noted for fishfood), 2.6 miles down the Limerick Road from the roundabout at the N6, N18 junction.
