The Brummbar is one example of the extremes to which the basic Panzer IV chassis could be adapted. With a heavily armored superstructure housing a short -barrelled 15 cm(5.91 in)howitzer in a ball-mounting on the front plate,it was termed an assault infantry gun.It was developed following the battle of Stalingrad when conventional tanks proved inadequate in the bitter street fighting. One of the main drawbacks to the early Brummbars, repeated on other similar designs such as the Elefant was that they lacked a defensive weapon against infantry tank-killer squads.A machine gun was carried but this was fired from an open hatch on the superstructure roof,a practice not to be recommended at the combat ranges at which the Brummbar was supposed to operate.Late production models were provided with an extra ball-mounted machine gun in the front superstructure. Most models had provision for stand-off armour plates. The firepower of the Brummbar at short ranges was considerable but partially limited by the number of rounds which could be carried, probably no more then 30 since the interior was already cramped with the crew of 5(4 inside the super structure),their kit and two radios.About 300 Burmmbars were produced the last of them just before the war ended. |
