The Churchill Mark VII was a major redesign. The turret was enlarged with a commanders cupola and dust guards fitted over the tracks.Armour was increased, there was a new gearbox and numerous detail design changes. The main armament was a 75mm(3.74 in)close support howitzer. The Mark IX to the Mark XI incorporated further improvements and there were numerous sub-marks such as the Mark IV NA75,a North African model created by rearming with 75 mm guns taken from wrecked Shermans. The Churchill AVRE,a Royal Engineers special armed with a mortar that launched a heavy demolition charge known as the Petard. This was only one of a host of Churchill special role tanks. To list all of them would fill pages.Suffice it to say that the Churchill fulfilled just about every role an armored vehicle could be called upon to assumer. The weight and stability of the Churchill enabled it to carry all manner of equipment, from landing mats to bridges.Churchills remained in service for years after 1945
