Effective as the M10 tank destroyer was it was felt that a gun with better long-range performance then the 3-inch(76.20 mm)would be required. There was a 90 mm(3.55 in)anti-aircraft gun available but a new turret had to be designed to mount this larger weapon. The result was the Gun Motor Carriage M36 standardized in June 1944.An order for 500 M36s was soon placed. The initial production run used the Ford V-8 engined M10A1 chassis although there was an expedient model, the M36B2 which involved placing the M36 turret directly onto unconverted M4A3 medium tanks 187 of these conversions were made.About 500 M10A1s were converted to M36 standard in order to get M36s into service as fast as possible. The M36 proved itself to be one of the most powerful of the American tank destroyers much better then the M10 which was withdrawn and replaced by the M36s. |
