As soon as design of the M3 was completed thoughts turned to producing a tank with a turret-mounted 75 mm(2.96 in)gun.A prototype the Medium Tank T6 appeared in September 1941.Entering production as the M4 at the incredible rate of 1,00(later 2,00)a month from 11 plants,by 1946 over 40,000 had been built-a decisive contribution to Allied victory. Based on the hull of the M3 the M4 had the same engine and suspension but M3s side doors were omitted.Engine supply was a problem:the intended Wright Continental radil was also needed for aircraft.Several others were used the Chrysler Multibank engine of the M4A4(actually five automobile engines driving a common main shaft)was so big that the hull had to be lengthened.M4s were immediately supplied to the British, who named it the Sherman;this became the most numerically important of all the British tanks.Entire Soviet tank corps were also equipped with M4s.From early 1944 M4s were armed with more powerful 76 mm(2.99 in)guns or even 105 mm(4.14 in)howitzers. The M4 was adapted to fulfill many roles and carry many types of special equipment, ranging from flame-throwers and mine rollers to dozer blades and rocket launchers.
