Having a welded hull and cast turret the A3 was powered by a 500hp Ford engine. The early production model was equipped with the M34 gun mount , vision slots in the front armour and a cast one-piece round nosed differential housing. The vision slots were replaced on later models by periscopes for the driver and this model was also fitted with sand shields. The last version of the A3 was equipped with the 75mm gun in an M34A1 gun mount , a vision cupola for the tank commander and placed a small oval hatch over the loaders position.
Other features of this vehicle included a 47-degree front armour plate on the hull , larger drivers doors and a cast one-piece sharp nosed differential housing.Someversions were fitted with the 75mm ammunition racks which had liquid filled containers on either side to prevent fire in case the side of the vehicle was pierced. As this arrangement was known as 'wet stowage' models fitted with this feature were known as M4A3W.The first up-gunning of the Sherman involved replacing the 75mm gun with the 76mm model which was a high velocity weapon designed to knock out all enemy tanks then in service.Unfortunately its anti-tank performance was inferior to the guns mounted by German Tiger and Panther tanks.
