History
Specification |
The Panzer II was larger then the Panzer I and was armed with a 2 cm (.79 in)cannon.Intended to be little more then a training tank,it entered frontline service because manufacturing delays held up deliveries of the Panzer III and IV.The first Panzer I's were issued during 1936,some seeing action in Spain. The first real production model was the Ausf D, followed by the Ausf E,which had an entirely new hull, suspension and armored layout.Further delays in heavier tank production meant that the last model, the Ausf F,was still on production lines until 1943.The Panzer II was little more then a reconnaissance vehicle but it was fast, reliable and mead up the numbers during the German conquests of 1940-42.Its value against enemy tanks was limited by the poor anti-armour performance of its main armament. After that it was adapted for many other roles. Some, such as the Marder II and Wespe self-propelled guns, were mainly new production vehicles. |
