The Tiger II was the most powerful combat tank of World War II.It was armed with an 8.8 cm(3.47 in)gun 71 calibres long and was provided with thick armour further improved by sloping plates to give extra protection.Mobility was limited by it great weight and incredible fuel consumption.Nevertheless the Tiger II was a formidable opponent and Allied troops learned to treat it with the greatest respect naming it the King or Royal Tiger.King Tigers were operated by special Panzer detachments and the Army and the SS constantly bickered about who should take delivery priority.Wherever the Tiger Iis were used they usually took over the battlefield for they could knock out Allied tank with ease at considerable ranges.Their own armour was so thick few enemy weapons could destroy them.
Formidable as the Tiger II was it suffered from the usual German ailment-there were never enough of them.Production began in early 1944 with the first reaching the Panzer battalions in June that year. But production was constantly disrupted by Allied bombing or delayed by raw material shortages so by the time the war ended only 489 had been manufactured far too few to stem the Allied advances on all fronts.A few King Tiger were produced as command tanks. The Jagdtiger was a close variant.
