The Medium Tank Type 89 derived from a Vickers commercial design the Medium Type C.The Japanese Army adopted the Type C in 1929 as a short cut to getting something better then tankettes into service quickly.Production was by Mitsubishi. There were two models which differed appreciably. The initial Type 89A was powered by a petrol unit adapted from an aircraft engine. The Type 89B had a diesel and numerous alterations to the front hull armour plating plus a revised turret with a cupola for the commander. The track was also changed on the Type 89B to overcome the excessive track wear of the Type 89A. The Type 89 was armed with a low-velocity 57mm gun with limited anti-armour performance , the turret also had the usual Japanese feature of a 6.5mm machine gun firing from a mounting at the back , another 6.5mm machine gun was mounted in the front hull.Despite being larger then most previous Japanese tanks the Type 89 had a very cramped interior and crew visibility was poor.Throughout its service life the Type 89 series underwent numerous detail changes.A more powerful diesel engine was fitted to late production models.Cross-country mobility was increased by the addition of an unditching tail at the rear. |
