The Light Tank Type 95 also known as the Kuy-Go or Ha-Go dated from 1935 and owed much to the Tankette Type 94 , having the same overall layout and a similar suspension (but with enlarged road wheels and improved springing). However the crew was increased to three with the extra man acting as hull machine gunner and general mechanic. The commander still served the main turret armament a 37mm gun , and the turret itself was offset to the left to provide more internal space. One of the two 7.7mm machine guns carried could fire from a mounting in the turret rear.On some late production models the 37mm gun was replaced by a 57mm low-velocity gun.
By 1939 about 100 had been built.More Type 95s were produced then any other Japanese tank but once in service they were used in penny packets as infantry support tanks , a role for which they were not suited.Apart from the poor armored protection crew visibility was very limited and there was a distinct area around each tank which could not be observed by the crew. The Type 95 hardly had an auspicious career and despite being the most important Japanese tank of World War II it must be judged a failure.Production ceased in 1943.
